If you have chipped or broken your tooth, get to the dentist as soon as possible if you are not bleeding. Even if it does not hurt, it is still a good idea to get to the dentist as soon as possible because there may be underlying issues that need to be taken care of immediately. Teeth fracture for many different reasons, including cavities, weak enamel, brittle teeth due to a root canal or non-vital pulp treatment, as well as trauma or blows to the mouth. If you noticed fracture lines within a chipped tooth you may see an increase in the damage over time, creating a larger chip and possible pain. Any fracture lines are a weakened state of the tooth structure, and must be dealt with. The treatments for fractured teeth can range from filing the tooth and reshaping it to placing new crowns, fillings, or veneers onto the tooth. A badly fractured tooth may require a root canal or possible extraction in an extreme case. Even if the tooth has been broken at the gumline, do not assume it cannot be saved. If your tooth has only minimal damage the dentist may attempt to save the tooth through filing and reshaping. If the tooth has been damage to the point where you are feeling pain when you chew on something or drink anything cold or hot, then the treatment may possibly involve more than simple filing and reshaping. Postponing or forgoing treatment generally will cause more problems to arise later as the situation has been given an opportunity to get worse. If you have noticed your teeth have cracked or you have a broken or chipped tooth, call our office immediately to set up an appointment. As long as you are not bleeding and the situation is not life threatening, make absolute dental your first call. . |
