The process of creating a more perfect smile can have numerous aspects, from cosmetic procedures that straighten your teeth and correct your bite, to less intricate procedures like cleanings and teeth brightening. The process of creating the perfect smile involves both aspects, as the structural elements of your oral health will improve the visual look of your teeth because bite alignment and orthodintics remove imperfections that are based upon shape and proportion, while the color of your teeth create visual appeal. Although the stains on your teeth (typically caused by coffee, tea, soda and smoking) are not actually adverse as far as the health of your teeth (at least in cases where the staining is only on the surface and not due to underlying health issues) the perception of healthy teeth is based in the color. The process of creating a whiter color on your teeth can be achieved in several different ways, depending on the desired outcome. Either way, teeth whitening or teeth brightening is a good procedure to create an appealing smile without too much effort.

Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is at the cornerstone of any visual improvement program, as the natuaral polishing elements of toothpastes and floss give ongoing assistance to keeping staining down. Keep in mind that teeth staining builds up over time due to habitual practices like drinking coffee every morning, so counter-acting the process by brushing and flossing with equal habituality will go a long way towards reducing the amount of yellowing and staining that occurs. If you enjoy ingesting dark colored foods or liquids on a regular basis, it is a good idea to brush your teeth after each time you do. This will assist in not allowing the staining to set in.

When you visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, they will perform a procedure that will scrape tartar and built-up deposits from your teeth, as well as polishing your teeth with a tool and compound that are more professional than anything you can buy for home use. Your dentist's procedure of "teeth brightening" will be the final step of your cleaning, and will be done once all deposits are removed. The level of this cleaning will vary, from "routine cleanings" which remove deposits on the tooth surfaces and just below the gum line, to the more invasive "deep cleaning" which involves the dentist going further below the gum lines. Deep cleanings are done less frequantly than routine cleanings, as the buildup below the gum line takes longer than the surface. In either case, the final step will be for the dentist to apply a gritty polish to your teeth surfaces and buff them bright with a specialized tool.

If you still need a little extra help in achieving the whiteness that you once had, then the next level of teeth brightening is a procedure called "teeth whitening," (sometimes misspelled as "teeth whitining" or "teeth whiteing") which involves the dentist isolating the soft tissues in your mouth with packing, then painting a strong bleach on the surfaces of your teeth. It is important to isolate your lips, gums and toungue from the bleach as it is so strong that it can irritate these areas if contact is made. The bleach is cured with a light and your teeth are brightened up to two shades in a single sitting. Several companies have branded a teeth whitening process as their own, but the most popular is Zoom Whitening.

Keeping your teeth white is an ongoing process, and it only gets more difficult as you get older. Regular brushing and checkups, along with cleanings and polishing will assist in your teeth brightening program.
