Mouthguards for Sports in Reno

Dental injuries are common during contact sports and certain recreational activities. If you or your children play sports like football, hockey, basketball, soccer or baseball, you should consider a custom-fitted mouthguard to protect the teeth and mouth.

Other activities, such as snowboarding, skateboarding, boxing and martial arts, can also lead to dental injuries. A mouthguard is an easy and affordable way to prevent dental emergencies that could require expensive or invasive procedures to fix the damage.

Many sporting goods stores will have stock or “boil and bite” mouthguards, but they are a one-size-fits-all option. If you want the most protection from dental trauma, a mouthguard that is customized to your mouth is essential. Your dentist will take a quick mold of your teeth in the dentist’s office, so the mouthguard is perfectly shaped to fit in your mouth.

Benefits of Custom-Fitted Mouthguards

A poorly fitted mouthguard could actually do more harm than good in some cases. You could end up cutting your gums if it’s too loose or risk the mouthguard falling out altogether. Anybody who plays contact sports or other high-impact activities should consider a custom-fit mouthguard for these reasons:

  • Prevent cuts and bruises after an impact
  • Prevent cracked, broken or dislocated teeth
  • Prevent soft tissue injuries in your mouth
  • Upper and bottom teeth won’t come in contact during impact
  • Protects the jaw from fracturing or becoming dislocated
  • Reduce head injuries, such as concussion, by absorbing some of the impact
  • Protect braces or other orthodontic gear from breaking
  • More comfortable than generic mouthguards

Night Guards for Teeth-Grinding in Reno

Although you can purchase a generic night guard at most pharmacies, it doesn’t always work for everybody. These dental night guards can easily fall out or cause irritation because they don’t fit over your teeth and gums properly. Especially with severe cases of bruxism (teeth grinding), it’s always best to have a custom-fitted night guard to fully protect your teeth from the damaging effects of this habit.

Grinding your teeth at night can lead to several issues that may become serious if nothing is done to prevent the damage. You may suffer from cracked or broken teeth, jaw pain, facial pain and headaches due to the pressure caused by teeth-grinding. Some patients even experience locked jaw or other TMJ.

If you have difficulties with teeth grinding and its effects, contact the team at Absolute Dental to learn how we can help protect your teeth with a custom dental night guard.

Reno Mouthguard FAQs

Mouthguards are made of a strong and durable material that fits around the upper teeth. It provides a flexible barrier between the upper and bottom teeth so they won’t damage each other if you experience a sudden impact to the mouth. The material that makes up the mouthguard also protects the jaw, gums and other soft tissue. The mouthguard prevents dental injuries by cushioning the blow while also allowing you to speak and breathe comfortably.

Any athlete, from little league players to professionals, will benefit from using a mouthguard. Even if the sport does not require a mouthguard, you should consider using one to protect your teeth from dental injuries.

According to the US National Library of Medicine1, basketball, football, hockey, martial arts and boxing carry the highest risk of dental injuries. Mouthguard protection can significantly reduce the risk of sports-related dental trauma.

Specialized mouthguards could help with TMJ by preventing teeth grinding and teeth clenching. However, you should always discuss TMJ options with your dentist or health professional before committing to a treatment. A mouthguard may not be the best solution for your case.
