What Is A Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats an infected tooth. The endodontic treatment involves:

  • Removing infected or dead tissue
  • Clearing the canals of bacteria
  • Restoring the tooth with filling material and a dental crown

Absolute Dental has decades of experience and uses a gentle approach to save the tooth and keep your smile healthy and strong.

Who Should Get A Root Canal?

People experiencing a consistent or worsening toothache may have an infected tooth or tooth abscess. Common symptoms of a tooth infection include:

  • Constant, throbbing pain in your tooth
  • Pain that spreads to the jaw, neck, face, or ears
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swelling in the gums, face, or lymph nodes
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Sharp or shooting pain in the tooth

If you have any of these symptoms, see your dentist right away. The pain may worsen, and the infection can spread if you don’t get treatment. Absolute Dental has multiple locations in Sparks and throughout Washoe County, where we provide root canal treatments.

Is A Root Canal Painful?

There is a common misconception that a root canal is painful. However, a root canal alleviates painful symptoms caused by the underlying infection. Patients typically have mild to severe discomfort before the procedure because the sensitive nerves in the tooth are inflamed.

Before your root canal, your Sparks dentist will numb the area completely with a local anesthetic. This provides immediate pain relief and keeps you comfortable during the treatment. Although you might feel sore for a few days after the root canal, you shouldn’t experience pain while your dentist is working on the tooth.

In the rare case that one of our patients does feel discomfort during the procedure, our skilled dental professionals won’t hesitate to pause and administer more anesthetic before continuing.

FAQs

There are several benefits to root canal treatment, including:

1. Prevents Further Damage

If a dental infection is left untreated, it can spread to surrounding tissue, teeth, and gums. Because your oral health significantly impacts your overall health, stopping the infection with a root canal is vital.

2. Provides Pain Relief

Because the nerves inside the tooth are removed during a root canal, the procedure eliminates pain and prevents further sensitivity or discomfort in that tooth.

3. It Saves Your Natural Tooth

If an infection damages a tooth beyond repair, the tooth must be extracted. You’ll need cosmetic treatments to restore your smile, such as dental implants or bridges. A root canal can save your natural tooth and prevent extraction.

4. Results Can Last For Decades

With the right techniques and care, root canals have high success rates and may even last a lifetime. Talk to your dentist about dental fillings and crowns to protect your tooth after a root canal.

There are several steps your dentist will perform during a root canal procedure:

  1. The area around the infected tooth is numbed with an anesthetic
  2. Using a special dental drill, your dentist will open the tooth to expose the infected tissue inside
  3. The dentist clears out infected dental pulp and bacteria in the canals. If needed, this process may take more than one session.
  4. The tooth is filled with a temporary filling and medicine to kill the remaining bacteria and infection
  5. At the next visit, the temporary filling is removed, and the permanent root canal filling is applied
  6. The dentist will cover the tooth with a protective dental crown
