Pediatric dentists use dental sealants to help fortify a child’s molars by providing a hard layer of protection. It is a thin coating of resin that is brushed over the grooves of the molars to prevent food particles from becoming lodged in the teeth and bacteria from growing. Dental sealant treatment is non-invasive and painless, making it ideal for young patients.
Our Las Vegas pediatric dentists have experience working with dental sealants as a preventative treatment to help reduce tooth decay and dental cavities. In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA)1 stated that dental sealants reduce the risk of cavities in children by as much as 80%!
Benefits of Dental Sealants
Because dental sealants cover the chewing surfaces of the molars, they lock out food particles, germs and plaque that can cause tooth decay. Along with being an effective way to prevent cavities, dental sealants also provide these benefits:
Non-invasive and painless
Done quickly in just one visit
Save in future dental costs and treatments
Proven to be safe by the ADA
Help kids keep up with good oral hygiene
There are very few downsides to dental sealants. Modern sealants are made of hazard-free materials and are completely BPA-free. However, there is a very small chance they could chip. You should expect the dental sealant to start to thin from normal wear and tear over the years—but they can be very easily repaired or replaced.

Applying dental sealants to your child’s molars is a fast and painless procedure in our Las Vegas Absolute Dental offices. There is no drilling and no numbing agents required when applying dental sealants. What you can expect is a relatively easy process that includes these steps:
The molars are thoroughly cleaned with a polishing brush and gritty toothpaste to remove bacteria and plaque.
The teeth are then allowed to dry completely. The dentist will apply a barrier between these teeth and the tongue and cheeks using a small cotton roll or cheek shield to keep saliva from reaching the teeth.
To ensure the sealant adheres completely to the tooth, the dentist applies an etching solution on the surface of the tooth to disinfect and prep the tooth.
The etching solution is rinsed off and the teeth are dried again.
The dentist brushes on a thin bonding agent, quickly followed by the sealant, directly to the enamel on the surface of the molars.
Using an LED blue light, the sealant hardens and bonds to the tooth’s surface in minutes.
Once your Las Vegas dentist confirms the dental sealants are completely hardened, the procedure is complete! Children can return to their routines immediately with no restrictions.
A medical-grade resin that is similar to composite dental filling material is used for dental sealants. However, the consistency of sealant resin is more liquid in nature to allow it to fill in the grooves and crevices of a child’s molar before hardening.
There are no restrictions after dental sealant treatments. Patients can eat and drink right away, return to school immediately and have no dietary limitations.
At a minimum, dental sealants should last anywhere from 3-5 years. Sometimes, they’ll even last for up to a decade! However, dental sealants will generally start to wear down after a few years.
In general, dentists recommend that children get dental sealants as soon as their permanent molars have grown. As an added layer of protection, they will give your child a better chance of avoiding tooth decay and cavities as they grow.
Most insurance companies consider dental sealants to be a preventative treatment and will cover most, if not all, of the procedure’s cost. However, it depends on individual insurance policies. Check with your insurance provider to see if dental sealants are included in your coverage and how much of the total cost they will cover.
