What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are an advanced alternative to traditional braces and provide an effective way to correct misaligned teeth. Made from transparent medical-grade plastic, these custom-made aligners gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, bringing you one step closer to your ideal smile.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

When getting clear aligners, you’ll be fitted for several variations that make slight adjustments to move your teeth during your treatment. The clear plastic or acrylic tray fits tightly over your teeth and is removable for eating, brushing, and flossing. Approximately every two weeks, the trays will be removed and new ones will take their place to continue moving your teeth into the desired position. The number of aligners necessary to correct this issue varies from person to person, depending on several factors that will be discussed with your dentist.

Who are clear aligners best suited for?

Clear orthodontic aligners are used for treating a number of dental conditions:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Diastema
  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Open bites
  • Malocclusion with primary teeth

Clear aligners may be better suited for older teens and adults as opposed to children and young teens. Clear aligners are removable and require a specific level of responsibility. For these reasons, it can be difficult for younger individuals to remember to reinsert them, and they can become lost or damaged if not properly cared for.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

There are several benefits of opting for clear aligners to correct your dental problems:

  • Comfort: Clear aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces. Their lack of wires and brackets means no worries about nicks or cuts from the hardware. They lack sharp edges and are similar to a mouthguard to ensure minimal discomfort.
  • Appearance: Since clear aligners are made of clear plastic or acrylic, they can be more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. People may not even know you are wearing them. You can smile freely while wearing your clear aligners without feeling self-conscious.
  • Convenience: With invisible aligners, you don’t have to worry about tightening or adjusting your hardware. This often means fewer dental visits. With Smile Direct Club, you may be able to skip dental visits altogether.
  • Removable: Clear aligners can be easily removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. This means you are still able to enjoy all your favorite foods with no restrictions. Areas of the teeth are more accessible for oral hygiene maintenance than is sometimes the case with traditional braces.
  • Minimal maintenance: Clear aligners can become discolored over time; however, this can be easily remedied by brushing them with a small amount of bleach and water to eliminate stains.

Frequently Asked Questions

You and your dentist or orthodontist will discuss the best options for your individual needs during your appointment. If it is determined that clear aligners are a good fit for you, a treatment plan will be created to get you on your way to a new and stunning smile.

The length of time it takes to straighten your teeth using clear aligners is based on how much the teeth need to be moved, your dedication to your treatment plan, and a few other factors. Treatment typically takes approximately 10 to 24 months, but you may see results in as little as four to six months.

Following your initial consultation and first fitting, you can expect to see your dentist every six to eight weeks during the treatment process to evaluate progress, ensure treatment is on track, and answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

You can achieve a star-studded smile with clear aligners from any of our Absolute Dental locations. Find a location near you and schedule an appointment today to get yourself on the path to a new smile and a more confident you!

Many individuals report feeling little to no discomfort with clear aligners. However, when getting new aligner trays, there can be some discomfort and mild pain. This is a result of your teeth adjusting to the new set of aligners. This pain can generally be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

Absolutely! Clear aligners are made of high-quality materials and sculpted to fit snugly against your teeth, free of movement and rubbing. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are free of sharp or rough edges, so cuts and nicks don’t occur. Our team of experienced professionals is with you every step of the way to ensure proper treatment and safety are achieved for all of our patients.

Because the trays are removed when eating, you can continue your diet as usual. We recommend returning the aligners to their case when eating as well as brushing your teeth after eating to remove food particles from between the teeth and gums.

Special Considerations for Clear Aligners

  • Clear aligners can be used in mild to moderate crowding cases but should be used with caution in more complex cases
  • Clear aligners should be worn 22 hours a day. They are a serious commitment and wearing them for 22 hours a day only gives you two hours to do all of your eating, drinking, and anything else that cannot be done with them in.
  • You need to brush your teeth frequently
  • If not worn for the recommended time, it could affect your treatment

Caring for your Clear Aligners

Caring for your aligners is a crucial part of the treatment process:

  • Brush regularly
  • Avoid using mouthwash on your aligners
  • Store trays in their case when not in use
  • Avoid heat
  • Avoid sugary or colored drinks when wearing your aligners
  • Always remove the trays before eating
  • Practice care when removing your aligners
