What Is a Dental Sealant?

Pediatric dentists use dental sealants to help fortify a child’s molars by providing a hard layer of protection. It is a thin coating of resin that is brushed over the grooves of the molars to prevent food particles from becoming lodged in the teeth and bacteria from growing. Dental sealant treatment is non-invasive and painless, making it ideal for young patients.

Our experienced Reno pediatric dentists use dental sealants as a preventative treatment to reduce tooth decay and cavities. According to the American Dental Association (ADA)1 studies have shown that dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities in children by about 80%!

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants coat the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. As a result, they seal out food particles, bacteria and plaque that can lead to tooth decay. In addition to effectively preventing cavities, dental sealants also provide these benefits:

  • Painless and non-invasive procedure
  • Done quickly in just one visit
  • Saves in future dental expenses and treatments
  • Proven to be safe by the ADA
  • Helps kids keep their teeth healthy and strong

Made with BPA-free and non-hazardous materials, modern dental sealants have very few downsides. However, there is a minimal chance they could chip. You can expect a slow thinning of the dental sealant after a few years, but they are very easily repaired or replaced.

The Process of Applying Dental Sealants

concept of dental treatment in a dental clinic
Before and After

Dental sealant application is a fast and painless procedure in our Reno Absolute Dental offices. No drilling and no numbing are required during this process. What you can expect is a quick and easy process with these steps:

  1. The dentist will clean the molars with a polishing brush and gritty toothpaste to remove built-up plaque and germs.
  2. The teeth dry as the dentist creates a barrier between these teeth, the tongue and cheeks, using a small cotton roll or cheek shield to keep saliva away from the teeth.
  3. To ensure the sealant successfully adheres to the tooth’s surface, the dentist applies an etching solution to disinfect and prep the tooth.
  4. The dentist rinses the etching solution, and the teeth are allowed to dry completely.
  5. A thin bonding agent is brushed on the teeth. Quickly following, the sealant is applied directly to the surface of the molars over the enamel.
  6. The sealant hardens and bonds to the tooth’s surface in minutes using an LED blue light.

After your Reno dentist confirms the dental sealants have hardened, the procedure is complete! Children are allowed to resume their daily routines immediately with no restrictions.

Dental Sealants - Frequently Asked Questions

Similar to composite material used in dental fillings, dental sealants use a medical-grade resin that hardens. The consistency of sealant resin differs slightly. Dental sealant resin is more liquid, allowing the grooves and crevices of a child’s molar to fill completely before hardening.

After dental sealant treatments, there are no restrictions. Patients are allowed to eat and drink right away and can return to school immediately with no side effects.

Generally, dental sealants should last between 3 and 5 years. However, they can last for up to 10 years for some patients! Dental sealants will typically start to wear down after a few years before needing to be replaced.

Most dentists recommend that children with permanent molars get dental sealants soon after they’ve grown in. The sealants provide an extra layer of protection that gives your child a better chance of avoiding tooth decay.

Most insurance companies consider dental sealants to be a preventative treatment and cover a portion or all of the cost. However, it depends on your insurance policy. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to ask if dental sealants are covered and how much of the total cost they will pay.
