What Is a Dental Sealant?
Pediatric dentists use dental sealants to help fortify a child’s molars by providing a hard layer of protection. It is a thin coating of resin that is brushed over the grooves of the molars to prevent food particles from becoming lodged in the teeth and bacteria from growing. Dental sealant treatment is non-invasive and painless, making it ideal for young patients.
Our experienced Reno pediatric dentists use dental sealants as a preventative treatment to reduce tooth decay and cavities. According to the American Dental Association (ADA)1 studies have shown that dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities in children by about 80%!
Benefits of Dental Sealants
Dental sealants coat the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. As a result, they seal out food particles, bacteria and plaque that can lead to tooth decay. In addition to effectively preventing cavities, dental sealants also provide these benefits:
- Painless and non-invasive procedure
- Done quickly in just one visit
- Saves in future dental expenses and treatments
- Proven to be safe by the ADA
- Helps kids keep their teeth healthy and strong
Made with BPA-free and non-hazardous materials, modern dental sealants have very few downsides. However, there is a minimal chance they could chip. You can expect a slow thinning of the dental sealant after a few years, but they are very easily repaired or replaced.
