What are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a type of dental component used to restore or permanently replace one or more missing teeth. There are three parts to a dental bridge: A pontic (false) tooth or teeth to cover the empty space and two abutments or supporting teeth. The abutments are connected to the teeth on either side of the gap with dental crowns to securely hold the bridge in place.
Dental bridges are considered cosmetic (a visual improvement) but can also help to prevent future dental problems. According to the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), people with missing teeth have a higher risk of developing:
- Tooth decay
- Periodontal or gum disease
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD)
- Nutritional changes or deficiencies
- Coronary artery disease
In addition to preventing health problems, bridges can help a person speak more clearly and smile more confidently. They will also prevent other teeth from shifting and changing a person’s facial shape.
