What Patients Can Expect with New Dentures

As with any dental procedure, it takes some time for patients to adjust to new dentures. Patients initially may feel a little uncomfortable while eating or speaking with newly-fitted dentures, but that should fade quickly. The more time that passes, the more natural they will feel.

Here are some things you can expect after you get new dentures, which will subside quickly as you get used to them:

• Dentures feel bulky or loose. This feeling will subside the tongue and cheek muscles strengthen adapt to hold the dentures in place.
• Increase of saliva. Hypersalivation is a normal reaction to an object being placed in the mouth. This will also improve with time.
• Minor irritation in the mouth. As the mouth adjusts to accommodate your new dentures, any irritation or soreness will go away. If you’re experiencing excessive pain or bleeding, see your dentist right away. This could be a sign that the dentures do not fit correctly or other dental issues have developed.
