    Periodontal Treatment FAQs

Although periodontists are also dentists, they have three additional years of education to specialize in treating gum disease and other gum-related issues. If you’re experiencing problems with your gums, your dentist will most likely recommend that you visit a periodontist to diagnose the issue, treat the condition and help prevent it from coming back. If you suffer from gum disease and suspect you may need specialized treatment from a periodontist in Las Vegas, call our offices to learn more.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums and surrounding tissue in the mouth. The bacteria will often accumulate at dangerous levels when an individual neglects their oral hygiene and allows plaque and tartar to build up on the teeth. However, many people suffer from gum disease without even knowing it.

Gum disease can be a milder form known as gingivitis, which only affects the gums. However, it could progress to a more destructive stage of gum disease known as periodontitis if left untreated. This is when the bacteria enter the pockets between the teeth and gums and begin to deteriorate the tissue, teeth and jaw bone. Gum disease can be dangerous and cause serious health issues if not addressed.

Although some people may not experience all these symptoms, some common signs of gum disease include bleeding gums, sensitivity, redness, swelling, loose or shifting teeth, bad breath that won’t go away, a receding gum line and pain when chewing. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to see your dentist. Catching and treating gum disease early can prevent more significant dental problems and help to maintain your oral health.

Daily brushing and flossing will help to prevent gum disease. By practicing good oral hygiene, you will remove the dangerous bacteria found in plaque and tartar that will start to eat away at your gums, teeth and jaw. You should also see your dentist for regular teeth cleanings and x-rays at least twice a year to keep gum disease at bay.

In addition to poor oral hygiene, other factors can put you at a higher risk of developing gum disease. These include smoking and tobacco use, age, genetics, underlying conditions like diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis that affect the immune system, chronic teeth grinding (bruxism), poor nutrition and certain medications that cause dry mouth. Dental patients who are pregnant are also more likely to develop gum disease during pregnancy. If you fall into any of these categories, do your best to stay on top of your oral health by brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly to prevent gum disease.
