What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a minimally invasive, restorative dental treatment for a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is made up of a pontic, or false, tooth that is anchored to your natural teeth with abutments to fill the gap. The fake tooth is held in place by the abutments and helps to prevent shifting of the teeth, jaw damage, and other dental issues.

Here are the different types of dental bridges we offer at Absolute Dental:

  • Traditional bridge: A traditional bridge consists of one or multiple false teeth attached by dental crowns to the patient’s adjacent teeth. This bridge is used when the patient has healthy teeth to provide a stable anchor for the bridge.
  • Resin-bonded bridge: Resin bridges use a type of resin bonding to attach the false tooth to the surrounding teeth. Typically used to replace front teeth, a Maryland bridge is a type of resin-bonded dental bridge.
  • Cantilever bridge: A cantilever bridge is similar to a traditional bridge, with the exception of only attaching to one tooth rather than two. These types of bridges are used when there is only one healthy abutment tooth to anchor the bridge.
  • Implant-supported bridge: If patients do not have healthy teeth to anchor a bridge, a dental implant can provide the support needed for a bridge. Instead of attaching the fake tooth to a patient’s natural teeth, it can attach to an implant that provides the same functionality as a natural tooth.

Why do I need a dental bridge?

A missing tooth is more than just a cosmetic issue. The effects of a missing tooth mean your teeth can begin to shift and move, changing your bite and ability to chew. Changes to your smile can also increase your risk of cavities and lower your self-esteem. To avoid these problems, replacing a missing tooth with a dental bridge may be the ideal option.

Significant benefits of dental bridges include:

  • Minimally invasive treatment for missing teeth
  • Improves chewing and speaking
  • Help maintain the natural shape of your face
  • Prevents shifting teeth and bite changes
  • Restores the appearance of your smile
  • Boost confidence and self-esteem

Dental bridges are also durable and long-lasting, giving you a long-term solution for missing teeth. They are also a quicker treatment than other cosmetic procedures, including dental implants or other prosthetics. Additionally, you don’t have to remove dental bridges for special care or cleaning like you do with partials or full dentures.

Who are the best candidates for dental bridges?

If you have one or more missing teeth in a row, you may be a good candidate for a dental bridge if you:

  • Have healthy teeth on either side of the gap
  • Have strong overall dental health
  • Practice good oral hygiene

The most important thing to consider when getting dental bridges is the health of the supporting abutment teeth. They should be able to hold the bridge in place and not be at risk of developing infections. Also, your gums should be in good shape to prevent gum disease, which could lead to further tooth loss.

What is the dental bridge process?

While every patient is different, and the procedure could vary slightly depending on the type of bridge you get, here’s what you can expect during the dental bridge process:

  • Anesthesia: Your dentist will first apply local anesthesia to the area where the bridge is being placed to ensure you are comfortable
  • Prepping the abutment teeth: The abutment teeth that will support the bridge are prepared by reshaping them to accommodate the crowns and the new false tooth
  • Dental impressions: Next, your dentist will take dental impressions of the teeth and send them to a dental laboratory to create the bridge
  • Temporary bridge: While your final bridge is being made, a temporary dental bridge is placed for a few weeks
  • Final bridge placement: When your permanent dental bridge is ready, you will visit your dentist’s office again to remove the temporary bridge, check the fit of the new bridge, and bond it in place

Dental bridge FAQs

After a tooth extraction, it takes some time for your gums to fully heal before you can get a dental bridge. Healthy gums mean your teeth are stabilized and strong enough to support the bridge. Generally, you’ll need to wait about five to six months before your dentist will fit you for a dental bridge.

The cost of a dental bridge will depend on several factors, including the type of bridge you get, how many teeth you’re replacing, and whether you need other dental treatments or procedures to support the bridge. Contact Absolute Dental to hear about our discounts on dental bridges in Sparks.

A traditional dental bridge can replace up to four missing teeth in a row if the abutment teeth are strong and healthy. Talk to your dentist to see if a bridge is the right solution for you. They may also recommend partial dentures for some patients.

A dental bridge is designed to be a permanent restorative treatment. While the bridge itself may need replacing after about 10 years, your teeth are already set up to support another dental bridge.

While a dental bridge is an excellent option for many patients, a dental implant is ideal for people who are only missing one tooth and want the longest-lasting restorative treatment. However, dental implants require oral surgery and a long recovery period before the final results. Discuss your options with your dentist to see what is best for you.
