What are dental crowns?

A dental crown or tooth crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over damaged or exposed teeth to restore the tooth’s natural shape and function. Attaching to the tooth using medical-grade dental cement, the crown shields the sensitive inner tooth from further damage and infections.

Dental crowns are made with durable materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, and composite resin. They are custom-made to fit a patient’s mouth and match the size and shade of their natural teeth. The results are a strong and radiant smile that restores your bite and improves overall oral health.

Do I need a dental crown?

You may benefit from a dental crown if you’re experiencing sensitivity or pain after a dental injury. Your dentist will also recommend a crown after certain dental treatments:

  • Exposed teeth after a root canal – A root canal exposes the inner pulp and nerves of the tooth when you develop an infection. A crown fits over the tooth after this procedure.
  • Broken or chipped teeth – When a tooth is chipped or cracked but no nerve damage is present, a dental crown is an ideal treatment to restore functionality without an invasive procedure
  • Large cavities – A large cavity can leave a significant hole in your tooth’s surface, leaving it vulnerable to damage. When there isn’t enough tooth left to support a filling, your dentist will likely recommend a dental crown.

  • Severely stained teeth – Dental crowns are a cosmetic dentistry solution when porcelain veneers or dental bonding are not the best treatments
  • Worn teeth – Some people grind their teeth, which can significantly wear down enamel. Dental crowns will protect and support the damaged tooth.
  • Dental bridge anchors – A dental bridge is a restorative procedure for missing teeth where a false tooth is anchored to two healthy teeth using dental crowns

How long is the dental crown process?

The process of getting a dental crown usually requires two separate appointments, two to three weeks apart.

First appointment

During your first appointment, your dentist will complete the following:

  1. Preparing the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel to make enough space and build a strong foundation for the crown
  2. Getting a dental impression of the tooth so the lab can create a dental crown that fits perfectly in your mouth
  3. Placing a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is made

Second appointment

When you return for your second visit, the final steps of the dental crown procedure include:

  1. Removing the temporary crown and cleaning the tooth
  2. Checking that the shape and shade of the crown fit your smile
  3. Carefully bonding the permanent crown to your tooth with dental cement

Some patients may require additional appointments if the permanent crown needs to be sent back for adjustments. Your dentist may also recommend other treatments to improve your oral health before you get your permanent crown. This can make the process a little longer; however, most patients will complete the process within three weeks.

FAQs about our dental crown services in Sparks

Depending on the type of crown, the quality of materials used to make the crown, and the right care, your dental crown can last for decades!

Our Sparks dentists use a gentle approach to carefully apply your dental crown. We will completely numb the area before the procedure to keep you comfortable. While you might feel some pressure as the crown is placed, you shouldn’t feel pain.

Although dental crowns are durable, some types of food can crack, loosen, or dislodge your crown. You should take extra care when eating:

  • Caramel, taffy, and other sticky candy
  • Hard nuts and seeds
  • Raw, crunchy vegetables
  • Cubed or crushed ice

If you’re eating these types of foods, be mindful of your crown and try to chew on the other side of the mouth.

We do take same-day appointments and walk-ins when availability allows. We recommend calling your Sparks dentist to see if there is a long wait. We give priority to dental emergencies.
