What are dental crowns?
A dental crown or tooth crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over damaged or exposed teeth to restore the tooth’s natural shape and function. Attaching to the tooth using medical-grade dental cement, the crown shields the sensitive inner tooth from further damage and infections.

Dental crowns are made with durable materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, and composite resin. They are custom-made to fit a patient’s mouth and match the size and shade of their natural teeth. The results are a strong and radiant smile that restores your bite and improves overall oral health.
Do I need a dental crown?
You may benefit from a dental crown if you’re experiencing sensitivity or pain after a dental injury. Your dentist will also recommend a crown after certain dental treatments:
- Exposed teeth after a root canal – A root canal exposes the inner pulp and nerves of the tooth when you develop an infection. A crown fits over the tooth after this procedure.
- Broken or chipped teeth – When a tooth is chipped or cracked but no nerve damage is present, a dental crown is an ideal treatment to restore functionality without an invasive procedure
- Large cavities – A large cavity can leave a significant hole in your tooth’s surface, leaving it vulnerable to damage. When there isn’t enough tooth left to support a filling, your dentist will likely recommend a dental crown.
