When do wisdom teeth come in?

A child’s first set of teeth usually follows a timeline. A baby’s first tooth can erupt when they’re half a year old. Teeth erupt until the last baby teeth come in around three years. Children between the ages of six and 12 lose their baby teeth, and permanent teeth arrive. Most permanent teeth have erupted by the age of 13.

Your third molars are the last permanent teeth to arrive. They come in at the very back of your upper and lower jaw. Most people get their wisdom teeth before they’re 22. It’s also possible to get your wisdom teeth in your late teens.

Does everyone have wisdom teeth?

Some people receive all four wisdom teeth. It’s also possible to receive fewer wisdom teeth or none at all. Although there’s a reasonable chance you won’t have to deal with wisdom teeth if yours haven’t appeared by the age of 22, your wisdom teeth can arrive when you’re older.

Wisdom teeth symptoms

Several symptoms indicate your wisdom teeth are impacted or ready to erupt. Your symptoms will vary based on whether there’s enough room for your wisdom teeth to erupt safely or whether your third molars are impacted.

Wisdom teeth symptoms can include the following:

  • Bad breath
  • Fever
  • Inflamed gums
  • Pain
  • Pus discharge from gums
  • Swollen face
  • Trouble swallowing

Since some symptoms could indicate other oral health issues, you must see your dentist to confirm the root cause.

Reasons for wisdom teeth removal

Many people don’t have enough room for their wisdom teeth. Consequently, the third molars can get trapped or push against other teeth when they erupt.

When your third molars are impacted, you could have swollen lymph nodes, headaches, pain, and swelling. Although impacted wisdom teeth are lodged in your jaw or gums, they aren’t protected from infection. These wisdom teeth can damage healthy teeth and trigger oral health issues, including cavities.

Wisdom teeth that erupt can also cause issues if they push against neighboring teeth. Since your wisdom teeth are the largest teeth you’ll get, they can dislodge other teeth, creating alignment issues.

How long does wisdom teeth extraction take?

Your dentist can usually remove a tooth in an hour or less. The time required for a wisdom tooth extraction will be longer if you have all four teeth to extract. It also takes longer to remove impacted wisdom teeth. You may be ready to leave your dentist’s office in less than two hours or spend several hours having your teeth removed.

When booking your wisdom teeth extraction, you must ask your dentist what to expect. Your dentist can estimate the time required based on your needs.

What to eat after wisdom teeth removal

Your mouth will be tender after your wisdom teeth removal, so you must follow your dentist’s instructions after your surgery. Avoid hard foods that can damage or remove the blood clot from the extraction site.

Foods you can eat include soft foods, such as the following:

  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Pudding
  • Smoothies
  • Soup
  • Yogurt

Foods you should avoid include the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Citrus juice
  • Granola
  • Hard candies
  • Meat

What should you do after you get your wisdom teeth out?

How quickly you recover depends on whether you get local anesthetic in your dentist’s office or get sedated. You may need hours to a day or so before you aren’t drowsy, and you should have someone drive you home after your appointment.

Things you should do include the following:

  • Follow your dentist’s care instructions
  • Take prescribed painkillers and antibiotics
  • Eat soft foods

Things you shouldn’t do after your wisdom teeth extraction include the following:

  • Drive
  • Exercise
  • Smoke

What to watch for after wisdom teeth extraction

Wisdom teeth removal can be complex, particularly if you have impacted wisdom teeth. Since these teeth are trapped below your gum line, they must be surgically removed. It’s normal for the tooth socket to bleed after removal. Still, some people suffer from dry sockets after their wisdom teeth extraction.

When the blood clot that protects your nerves and bone is removed from the socket, you have a dry socket. Symptoms of dry socket include the following:

  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Mild fever
  • Radiating pain

Payment options

If you have one erupted wisdom tooth, it may only cost a few hundred dollars to extract the tooth. However, the more wisdom teeth you have, the higher the cost. Whether the wisdom teeth have erupted or are impacted will also affect your wisdom teeth removal cost. Other factors that affect your bill include whether you opt for sedation and where you’re located.

Absolute Dental’s Smile Saver Program makes affordable dental care available to all Nevada residents. Your annual membership fee includes free dental checkups and discounts on other services. Smile Saver members pay as little as 50% of the regular price for some services.

Absolute Dental also offers specials on some dental services, including wisdom teeth extractions.

We accept most insurance plans, including dental coverage from companies such as Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, United Healthcare, and Care Credit. Our website has a complete list of insurance companies we accept.
