What Are Custom Mouthguards?
A custom mouthguard is a dental device that fits over the teeth and gums to help prevent and reduce the risk of injuries and damage to the mouth. Your kid needs a mouthguard for the following reasons:
- They play sports
- They have problems with grinding their teeth when they sleep
- They participate in recreational activities that could damage their braces
Our pediatric dentists in Las Vegas will properly fit your child with a custom mouthguard that fits securely and correctly.
Mouthguards for Kids’ Sports
Sports injuries, from strains and sprains to broken bones, are common in youth sports. Injuries to the jaw, teeth, and mouth are also common occurrences. Mouthguards for kids’ sports reduce and minimize dental injuries during recreational activities and sports, such as:
- Soccer
- Basketball
- Football
- Lacrosse
- Martial arts
- Boxing
- Skateboarding
- Skiing
- Snowboarding
- Baseball
- Hockey
While most team sports equipment includes a mouthguard, these are a “one size fits all” device. It does not provide sufficient protection to your child’s jaw, teeth, and mouth. Some of the problems with these types of mouthguards are:
- Poorly fitted mouthguards can fall out
- Increased risk of cuts to the gum and tongue
- Insufficient protection to the teeth and braces
- Increased risk of jaw injuries
A custom mouthguard is the only way to ensure your child is sufficiently protected. Our pediatric dentists take a bite mold of your child’s teeth in our office. We use this mold to design and create a custom mouthguard that properly and securely fits over their teeth and gums, even if they have braces.
