What Should a Person Eat After Getting Their Wisdom Teeth Removed?

When considering wisdom teeth surgery, it is understandable to want to know what to eat after wisdom teeth removal. A person should eat soft and easy-to-chew foods that will not irritate the surgical site to avoid causing any discomfort or complications. Some recommended soft food diet options include:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Ice cream
  • Applesauce
  • Bananas
  • Warm soup
  • Jello
  • Oatmeal
  • Smoothies and shakes
  • Avocados
  • Pudding
  • Cottage cheese
  • Pasta
  • Mangos

It is equally important not to use a straw when drinking as the sucking action could rupture the incisions where the wisdom teeth were removed.

What Foods Are Nutritional?

Some post-oral surgery diet nutrient-rich foods that are soft and easy to eat include:

  • Protein sources such as eggs, tofu, yogurt, and soft-cooked beans
  • Leafy greens like spinach or kale blended into smoothies
  • Peanut butter for healthy fats and protein
  • Mashed avocado for good fats and added nutrients
  • Soft-cooked vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, or squash
  • Citrus fruits for antioxidants and vitamin C

What Foods Don’t Require a Lot of Chewing?

Some examples of foods that are easy to eat without much chewing include:

  • Applesauce
  • Smoothies or shakes
  • Mashed potatoes or mashed sweet potatoes
  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Soft-cooked vegetables
  • Cottage cheese
  • Ice cream

What Foods Should Be Avoided?

After getting their wisdom teeth removed, individuals should avoid certain foods that can cause irritation, discomfort, or complications at the surgical site, including:

  • Crunchy or hard foods like nuts, popcorn, chips, and raw vegetables
  • Chewy or sticky foods such as gum, caramels, and gummy candies
  • Spicy or hot foods that may irritate the surgical site
  • Foods with small seeds that can get lodged in the site of the dental extractions

Why Is It Important to Follow a Soft Food Diet After Wisdom Teeth Surgery?

It is important to follow a soft food diet after wisdom teeth surgery for several reasons as follows:

  • Chewing hard or crunchy foods can put pressure on the surgical sites and potentially dislodge blood clots, leading to delayed healing or dry socket formation
  • Soft foods are easier to chew and swallow, reducing discomfort and preventing irritation of the extraction sites
  • Soft foods require minimal jaw movement, aiding in the recovery process
  • Nutrient-rich soft foods support overall health and promote faster healing after oral surgery

Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Meet with your dentist to discuss the procedure, review any allergies, ask questions, and receive pre-operative instructions. Your dentist will also provide a list of things to do to prepare for recovery at home, such as having access to ice packs and soft foods and things to avoid post-surgery.

Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Manage pain and swelling with prescribed or over-the-counter medications, follow post-operative care instructions, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, avoid smoking and vaping, and get plenty of rest.

Diet and Nutrition Post-Surgery

It is important to get the proper diet and nutrition post-surgery. Follow a soft diet consisting of nutrient-rich foods that provide needed nutrition to help heal. Remember to follow the soft diet until the dentist says you can return to eating other foods. Most importantly, hard, crunchy, and sticky foods should be avoided entirely until the gums are completely healed.

What Should a Person Do If There Are Any Complications?

If there ever are any post-wisdom teeth extraction complications, like bleeding that won’t stop, ruptured incisions, allergic reaction to medications, severe pain, or other issues, it is important to see an emergency dentist in Las Vegas right away. At Absolute Dental, we have several emergency dental locations, and no appointment is needed. However, it is best to call our dental emergency hotline to speak with one of our dentists first and determine if you need to come into the office.

Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQ

A diet of soft foods rich in nutrients and vitamins is best after wisdom teeth removal. However, ice cream, jello, and pudding are acceptable in moderation.

Any type of soft fast food is okay to eat after wisdom teeth removal, including:

  • Soft tacos with ground meat, beans, cheese, tomatoes, and sour cream
  • French fries, tater tots, and mashed potatoes
  • Mac and cheese, spaghetti with marina, and fettuccine alfredo
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Pancakes
  • Grilled cheese sandwiches
  • Chicken nuggets without crunchy breading
  • Soft breadsticks
  • Traditional soft-crust pizza with just cheese

Yes, mac and cheese is a suitable food option after wisdom teeth surgery. The soft texture of the pasta and creamy cheese sauce makes it easy to chew and swallow without causing discomfort or irritation to the surgical sites.

Types Of Pediatric Orthodontic Appliances

When your child starts seeing a pediatric general dentist at Absolute Dental, they may recommend different types of pediatric orthopedic appliances to correct potential dental problems while they are still growing and developing. Making these dental corrections at an early age is much easier than waiting until they are older since bones are not entirely hardened and are easier to manipulate into the desired position.

Rapid Palatal Expander (Rpe)

One pediatric orthodontic appliance is called a rapid palatal expander (RPE). This device is used to correct teeth crowding problems, crossbite, and expand jaw width. RPEs can be removable, or some designs are bonded to the molars and remain in place until the treatment is completed. A key is turned to expand the device, and pressure is put on the upper jaw to expand it. Your orthodontist will let you know how many key turns are needed at the start of treatment.

Twin Block

Another pediatric appliance used to correct overbites is a twin block. It consists of an upper and lower device that looks similar to a retainer. Each part is placed inside the mouth, and they interlock when your child closes their mouth, causing the lower jaw to move forward. Children typically wear the twin block all the time since they can play, drink, eat, sleep, and talk with the appliance in. However, it is removable so that it can be cleaned.

Herbst

A Herbst is another pediatric dental appliance used to correct overbites. It consists of upper and lower pieces cemented to the upper and lower molars. Then, those pieces are connected together using metal arms. When your child bites down, it helps push the lower jaw forward to correct the overbite. It is important to remember these are just a few examples of pediatric orthodontics appliances that can be used to correct jaw, teeth, and dental problems to give your child a gorgeous smile.
