Overcoming Dental Anxiety With Sleep Dentistry in North Las Vegas

Dental anxiety and severe dental phobia are common problems. Sedation dentistry helps patients relax and undergo dental treatments they might otherwise avoid.

The goal of sedation dentistry is a smooth and comfortable recovery and a positive dental experience. This specialized kind of dentistry also helps those who have a strong gag reflex or a low-pain threshold, common reasons patients seek sedation.

No matter your condition, we can likely find a solution suitable for your unique needs.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to methods used to help patients become comfortable and relaxed during dental procedures. Patients typically remain awake during procedures but are put into a severely relaxed state through the use of inhaled, oral, or intravenous medication. The state that patients are placed in is sometimes called “twilight sleep.”

This state of relaxation makes procedures far easier for those with medical conditions, like anxiety or who need extensive dental procedures. In some cases, patients won’t even remember the procedure at all.

Types of Sedation Offered at Absolute Dental

Absolute Dental offers a number of different levels of sedation granting differing amounts of relaxation and comfort.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a mask. This sedation method is often the first choice for those with anxiety or who do not respond well to numbing medication. It has a quick onset and offset, allowing patients to drive themselves home after routine cleaning or minor dental work.

Oral Sedation (Pill Form)

Oral sedation dentistry involves a sedative pill typically administered before the dental appointment. This is considered to be a mid-level form of sedation. Conscious oral sedation helps patients relax significantly, often leading to a feeling of drowsiness or “twilight sleep.” Oral sedation is best for those with moderate anxiety.

IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation)

IV sedation is the deepest form of conscious sedation, administered directly into the bloodstream for immediate and controllable effects. This form of sedation is most often used for extensive dental work or for patients with severe dental phobia.

During the procedure, a sedation dentist carefully monitors vital signs throughout the entirety of the process to ensure safety of the patient.

Benefits of Choosing Sedation Dental Services in North Las Vegas

The main benefit of choosing sedation dentistry is a nearly completely pain-free experience. Simply put, sedation dentistry is stress-free dental care. Sedation dentistry also allows patients the ability to undergo multiple procedures in a single visit with less discomfort.

Additionally, sedation dentistry helps those with a strong gag reflex and low-pain threshold tolerate dental procedures with a minimum of anxiety and pain.

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

It’s more than just for those with anxiety or low-pain thresholds; senior sedation dentistry and pediatric sedation dentistry are great options for seniors and children respectively. Sedation for wisdom teeth extraction, sedation for root canals, and sedation for dental implants are also effective. Ask our dentists or support staff today if sedation dentistry might be right for your dental procedure.

Preparing for Your Sedation Dental Appointment

On the day of your visit, you may be asked to fast or abstain from eating or from other practices by your dentist. However, don’t worry. This will all be covered thoroughly before your visit by your dentist.

For all forms of sedation dentistry, aside from nitrous oxide, you’ll also want to arrange a ride home from a trusted family member or friend as you will not be able to drive for a number of hours after the procedure.

What To Expect During Your Sedation Procedure

When arriving at the dental office, you’ll be prepared for treatment, and a dentist will explain everything you will need to know. You’ll be comfortably seated in the dental chair, receive one of the three forms of sedation, as discussed beforehand, and the procedure will begin with you in a relaxed state.

During the procedure, you will be continuously monitored by the sedation dentist and other support staff for the utmost safety.

After Your Sedation Dental Treatment

After the procedure, you’ll be provided with detailed post-procedure instructions for a smooth and comfortable recovery. You may be advised to rest, to avoid certain activities, and informed of who to contact with questions.

FAQ

It depends on the procedure. With nitrous oxide, you’ll likely remember most of the procedure. With oral and IV sedation, most patients only remember small parts of the procedure or don’t remember anything at all, even though they remain conscious during the procedure.

Yes. Sedation dentistry is always administered under licensed and thoroughly trained dentists. Absolute Dental will always take a thorough medical history before the procedure to minimize the risk of any complications due to prior history or medical issues.

This depends on the procedure. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off within minutes. Oral sedation generally lasts several hours, and the initial effects of IV sedation wear off quickly, but secondary effects can last throughout the day. For the latter two procedures, you’ll need to schedule a ride home beforehand.

This is dependent on the procedure. The answer is generally yes for nitrous oxide and oral sedation and no for IV sedation, but your dentist will give you detailed instructions beforehand.

In many cases, yes it will, although coverage varies. It is best to consult your dental plan for more information.
