While most issues with braces can be handled at home, some require a visit to the orthodontist. The most common issue is braces wire irritation in Reno. Fortunately, this issue is fixable, although maybe uncomfortable for the time being until you get help.
If you’re having a broken braces emergency in Reno, or having a loose wire orthodontic emergency, we’re here to help. Call us now, and we can relieve your pain in no time.
Not every orthodontic issue is an emergency, but many can be. True orthodontic emergencies include severe pain, a braces wire poking your cheek that is causing significant discomfort or bleeding, or a broken appliance that is causing further damage to the teeth or soft tissues of the mouth. These issues should all be treated by an orthodontist right away.
When in doubt, give Absolute dental a call for emergency dental care Reno. No matter what the issue may be, severe discomfort is always an emergency.
The Most Common Orthodontic Emergencies We Treat
Wire Irritation and Poking Wires
While some irritation is a normal part of wearing braces, sometimes more severe discomfort can arise with irritation or wires poking your cheek, tongue, or mouth. This often happens when a dental appliance or wire gets broken.
What To Do
If a broken braces wire irritates you, use a pencil eraser or a q tip to carefully push the wire out of the way. If the wire can’t be pushed, a small piece of orthodontic wax for wire irritation can be placed on the end of the wire to provide temporary relief from irritation on the cheeks or gums.
Following this home care, book an emergency orthodontic appointment at our Reno clinic to get the wire trimmed by our orthodontist.
Loose Bracket
A loose bracket or a loose wire can occur if you eat sticky or hard foods, as well as occasionally due to other issues.
What To Do
If a bracket comes off, carefully remove it and save it. If the bracket is still on the wire, slide it to the center of the tooth and put orthodontic wax on it. If you have a loose wire, use a pair of tweezers to gently try to push the end of the wire back into place.
After this home care, see an orthodontist immediately.
Lost Separator
A lost separator is a normal occurrence and is a sign that the teeth are moving.
What To Do
This is rarely an emergency, but you should contact our office to determine if it needs to be replaced before your next scheduled appointment.
Broken Appliance
A broken appliance can cause discomfort and is a true orthodontic emergency.
What To Do
Contact our office right away to schedule an emergency appointment to get your appliance repaired.

Managing Discomfort and Soreness
While some pain and soreness are to be expected after getting braces or after an adjustment, managing wire irritation and other forms of orthodontic discomfort at home is relatively easy.
What To Do
Take non-aspirin pain relievers and eat soft foods. You should especially avoid hard or sticky foods, such as chewing gum and candy. A saltwater rinse can also help with mouth sores or discomfort causing bleeding. If you’re being poked by a wire or an appliance, cover the sharp end with mouth wax.
Remember, this discomfort is temporary and will likely subside within three to five days. If it does not go away within this timeframe, call us right away.
Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies
Many orthodontic emergencies can be prevented by some good habits and with proper care of your dental appliances.
Primarily, you should avoid hard and sticky foods that can damage their braces. These include treats like chewing gum, hard candies, and caramel. You should also be sure to brush twice per day and floss once, or as directed by a dentist. Maintaining good oral health through brushing and flossing can help avoid any complications and keep your smile healthy.
Always follow the treatment plan outlined by your dentist, and you should be okay. For everything else, give us a call.

If the wire is causing you discomfort or bleeding, then yes, it is a true orthodontic emergency. Call Absolute Dental’s Reno office for an emergency appointment.
A loose bracket is still attached to the wire. It can likely move around on the tooth or has flipped backward, causing significant irritation. A broken bracket has come completely off the wire. Both of these instances are emergencies, and you should contact our office right away.
It is best to take non-aspirin over-the-counter medication like Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve. Always follow the instructions on the package, unless directed otherwise by a doctor.
Yes, it can, but this is part of the process. If you lose a separator, give our office a call to see if you need to come in before your next regularly scheduled appointment.
Mix one cup of warm water with a teaspoon of salt and stir until all of the salt is dissolved. Rinse your mouth with the mixture for up to a minute, then spit it out. You can repeat this up to five times a day.
