Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth is a critical dental emergency. The chance of saving the tooth is highest if you get immediate treatment.
What To Do
Hold the tooth by the crown (the part that usually sticks out past your gums), gently rinse the tooth without scrubbing it, and attempt to reinsert the tooth in the socket, if possible.
If reinsertion is not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk. For any instance of a knocked out tooth, you should immediately contact our office and visit us right away. You may lose the tooth if you delay.
Severe Toothache
A toothache pain can be a symptom of an underlying problem, like a deep cavity or infection. For any severe tooth pain that is sudden, is worsening, or has not gone away after a few days, see us immediately.
What To Do
Rinse your mouth with warm water, gently floss to remove any trapped food particles, and take over-the-counter pain relievers. You should also note that these are temporary fixes, and a visit is necessary to address the root cause and relieve pain permanently.
Lost Filling or Crown
A lost filling or crown can expose the sensitive inner part of the tooth, leading to severe pain and an increased risk of infection.
What To Do
Contact our emergency dentist immediately. In the meantime, you can temporarily secure the crown with dental cement or a small dab of toothpaste until your same-day appointment.
Bleeding and Oral Injuries
Oral injuries involving the gums, tongue, or lips may be emergencies if there is an excessive amount of blood or you cannot stop the flow of blood on your own.
What To Do
Rinse your mouth with a salt-water solution and apply pressure with clean gauze to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding doesn’t stop within 10 minutes, or if there is severe injury, a visit to our emergency care team is necessary to prevent infection and address the trauma.
Dental Abscess or Swelling
An abscess is a serious infection at the root of a tooth or elsewhere in the mouth that can cause severe pain and swelling.
What To Do
A dental abscess can be a life threatening situation if the infection is left untreated, as it can spread to other parts of the body. If you find an abscess, rinse with warm salt water and seek prompt treatment to drain it and treat the infection.

To see a dentist as soon as possible.

We will then take a look at the tooth and surrounding areas, including the gums, to get a complete picture.
In some cases, imaging, like X-rays, may be necessary.
Once an accurate diagnosis is made, we will discuss with you the treatment options and the best course of treatment to repair the damage, relieve the pain, and prevent further complications.
Treatment can then begin.
We always aim to provide the necessary treatment during your first visit, saving you from having to wait or to come back. Our goal in emergency situations is to get you the best care fast.
When Your Child Experiences a Dental Emergency
A child’s dental emergency can be especially alarming for parents. But we pride ourselves on providing emergency dentistry for the whole family, and our outstanding team has many years of experience in handling the unique needs of your child. We can promise you they’re in good hands.
Common childhood issues include knocked out teeth (both baby teeth and permanent teeth can be an emergency) and fractured teeth. Even a small chip can cause pain and requires evaluation.
As always, our approach is gentle and empathetic, ensuring both you and your child feel safe and comfortable during the emergency care procedure. We will take the time to assess the injury thoroughly to ensure the best course of action is taken.
How To Avoid Dental Emergencies
Although not all injuries can be prevented, some precautions can be taken to minimise them:
Always wear a mouthguard during sports.
Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle.
Do not use your teeth to open bottles or other packages.
Always brush twice per day and floss once to keep teeth and gums healthy.
Get routine dental checkups every six months or as directed by your doctor to spot any issues before they become larger problems.
By taking these sensible precautions, you can protect your smile and avoid unexpected trips to see us. We would much rather prevent an accident than have to fix one.
And if something does happen, call us right away. We’re here for all of your emergency dental needs.
