What Is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?
As the names imply, inlays and onlays treat specific parts of your teeth. Your dentist will use inlays to address damage inside the tooth and onlay treatments to repair issues on the tooth’s surface.
Is the Procedure for Gold Inlays and Onlays Painful?
Whether you opt for gold inlays and onlays or another material, you should have a pain-free experience during your procedure. You’ll see your dentist twice to complete the process, and your dentist will use a local anesthetic to prevent pain.
Installing inlays and onlays begins with visiting your dentist to assess the damage. While some people get inlays and onlays because of cracks or chips, others may need a cavity cleared out to prepare for the inlay or onlay. Your dentist will make a mold of your tooth to create a permanent inlay or onlay. They will install a temporary filling or onlay to protect your tooth until the permanent one is manufactured. Once manufactured, you’ll return to their office to remove the temporary one so they can install your permanent inlay or onlay.
Are Inlays and Onlays Expensive?
Inlays are more expensive than regular fillings, but inlays provide more support because they’re custom-made for your tooth. Consequently, your tooth will be stronger and function the way a normal tooth should.
Onlays are less expensive than crowns. A dental onlay can cost up to $1,200, while a crown can cost up to $3,000, but the costs may vary. Factors such as the location of the tooth and the type of damage can affect the final price.
