General Anesthesia
General anesthesia may be appropriate for long or complex dental procedures. When you’re sedated with general anesthesia, you’ll be asleep during the oral surgery and not experience any discomfort during treatment. You will need a person you trust to assist you in getting home.
Nitrous Oxide
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide provides a comparatively mild level of sedation that wears off quickly. This is a common option used for tooth extractions or other procedures that require the patient to stay awake and respond to prompts from the oral surgeon. It effectively reduces pain and anxiety without putting the patient fully to sleep.
Oral Medications
Oral medications may be the best option for some patients who need dental surgery. These are usually in pill form and taken about 30 minutes before the procedure. It can take several hours for you to fully recover from these sedative effects.
