FAQs about Dental Emergencies & Our Services

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, you should seek treatment immediately. Call our Dental Emergency Hotline ā€“ Call (702) 744-8009 to speak to a Board-Certified Dentist in minutes.

You do not need an appointment for a dental emergency. In the meantime, do your best to rinse out your mouth, stop the bleeding, and preserve your tooth in milk, saline solution, or water (if your tooth was knocked out). Applying a cold compress will help with swelling and pain until you get treatment.

A dental emergency generally involves immediate risks to the patient, including the risk of infection or permanent tooth loss. Also, the patient will usually experience severe pain that cannot be eased with at-home remedies and requires professional treatment.

Some examples of a dental emergency include: knocked out teeth, cracked or chipped tooth, abscessed tooth or damage to the gums or tongue.

Many of these situations are a result of unexpected trauma to the mouth or sudden impact that damaged the teeth. Learn More about what classifies as a dental emergency here.

If you are experiencing a painful toothache, some temporary remedies include over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.), rinsing the mouth with warm salt water, flossing around the aching tooth to dislodge anything that could be causing the discomfort, using a dental anesthetic gel, sleeping with your head slightly elevated, and applying oil of cloves to the area. Although these help in the short term, be sure to schedule an appointment with your dentist for professional treatment as soon as possible.

When experiencing a toothache, you may find it difficult to sleep. Before you can see your dentist for treatment, try taking either ibuprofen or acetaminophen to ease the pain, then prop your head up with an extra pillow. Keeping your head elevated prevents blood from rushing to the tooth, which may intensify the pain. You can also try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and applying an ice pack right before bed.

Treatment For Dental Emergencies

Treatment for dental emergencies starts before you get to the dentistā€™s office. You should take the following general precautions and actions before arriving:

If you are bleeding: Go immediately to theĀ hospitalĀ if you have excessive bleeding, suspect you have broken your jaw, or experience significant swelling.

If you have lost a tooth: Keep the area in and surrounding the tooth or teeth clean and free of dirt and debris by rinsing with warm water. Also, put the tooth in milk or keep it in your mouth if possible.

If you have swelling: Apply cold compresses to control swelling.

In all cases of emergencies: The dentist will need to examine your teeth and gums to determine what happened. The dentist will also ask you questions about the incident that caused the problem and will request information about your medical history. Only then can the dentist determine the treatment method that is correct for the emergency.

Important Considerations

Dental emergencies require immediate attention from a dentist. If there is ever a question in your mind that you have a dental emergency, you should contact a dentist immediately.

Being prepared for dental emergencies beforehand gives you the best chance of success. If you donā€™t have a regular dentist, please feel free to keep our contact information in your wallet or purse so you can call quickly and get to our nearest location. Signs and Symptoms of a Dental Emergency

If you’ve had a blow to the mouth, swelling is often one of the first symptoms. However, if you suddenly experience swelling of your lips, gums, tongue or other areas of your mouth with an obvious cause, it can be a sign of something serious. Sometimes it can be as simple as food particles stuck in between your teeth or gums and is causing irritation.

Other times, more serious causes like cysts, infections, and possibly oral cancer are at the root of the swelling, and early detection and examination by your dentist is crucial to avoiding complications down the road.

While taking pain medication at home may cause dental pain to go away, you should always consider that whatever is causing the pain should be checked out by a dentist as soon as possible. Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong, and before long a minor pain in your mouth can become a major issue! Pain may mean you have an oral infection, which has the potential to be a life-threatening condition as it can spread to other parts of your body.

A tooth that has been knocked out is referred to as ā€œavulsed.ā€ This is probably the most common dental emergency, and this situation happens to more than five million people per year. The good news is many of these teeth can be saved and replaced by a dentist. It is crucial that you do not delay if your tooth is knocked out, because time is of the essence in getting it replaced and healthy. The longer it takes you to get to a dentist, the less chance the tooth has of being saved.

There are many lifestyles that put you in the risk category for potentially having an emergency, and knowing what to do beforehand is the key to keeping yourself safe. If you play sports, especially contact sports like football and boxing, Always wear protective guards for your mouth when participating in order to reduce your risks. However, simple daily activities can also cause an emergency. Many people break their teeth every year by chewing ice or using their teeth to open the packaging. Avoid these kinds of activities.
