What Is a Cavity?
A cavity, also known as dental caries or tooth decay, is permanent damage to the enamel of a tooth. They develop when natural bacteria in the mouth produce acids as a byproduct of their digestion. This acid then wears the tooth enamel, causing a cavity.
Over time, this eating away of the tooth enamel can become painful, but cavities often begin as tiny spots that you cannot feel and are not painful at all. The best way to understand if you might have a cavity is through a routine cleaning and inspection.
At a routine inspection, your dentist can spot any cavities that you cannot feel or see. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to see your dentist every six months for a checkup.
Why Do Cavities Happen?
Cavities are usually caused by a number of factors, not just a single thing. Medically, cavities are generally caused by the buildup of bacteria and their byproducts on the teeth. These bacteria and byproducts are removed through brushing and flossing the teeth.
These bacteria like to feed on sugar in particular. Eating a lot of sugary foods can cause the number of bacteria and their byproducts to grow in the mouth, creating a greater risk for cavities. Poor oral hygiene habits, such as forgetting to brush and floss, can contribute to bacteria growth.
Other factors can play a role as well. If your water contains fluoride, a mineral that helps repair tooth enamel, you will likely have fewer cavities. You can also be more prone to cavities if you take medications or have conditions that cause your mouth to be dry, as active saliva helps to clean the mouth.
Finally, some systematic health conditions, such as diabetes, can also contribute to cavities.

How Do I Know If I Have a Cavity?
In many cases, you won’t know if you have a cavity at all. At the early stages of having a cavity, they are largely painless, and it’s difficult to see them in a bathroom mirror. This is, in part, why it’s so important to be seen by a dentist every six months or as directed.
It’s always better to catch cavities earlier. When caught early, cavities can be dealt with using less invasive measures than when they progress.
If cavities are not caught early, they will progress and may begin to show symptoms. Symptoms of cavities may include:
- Brown or black staining on the teeth.
- Visible holes or pits on the teeth.
- Bad breath.
- Pain when chewing or brushing.
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, and/or sweet foods and beverages.
If you have any of these issues, it’s important to see a dentist right away before things progress further and require more costly and invasive treatment.

Tooth Decay Treatment in Las Vegas
The treatment of your cavities generally depends on how advanced they are.
The first and often preferred method is with a dental filling. With this option, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed with a drill and then filled with a variety of material, including traditional amalgam (silver), ceramic, or resin. During this treatment, you’ll receive a local anesthetic, or for those with severe fear of anxiety, Absolute Dental can offer a number of general anesthetics.
The second option is for a dental crown. Dental crowns are caps that fit over your teeth. These are used when there is extensive decay and a large part of the tooth is damaged.
If the decay in your tooth has reached the inner pulp, you may also need a root canal. With root canal treatment, your dentist will remove the tooth pulp, clean and disinfect the tooth, and then fill and seal your tooth. In most cases, you’ll also receive a crown.
The last and most severe option for treating decayed teeth is a dental implant. This process is only used for severe forms of decay. In this process, your tooth will be removed, and a titanium or ceramic post will be surgically implanted in your jaw. Once your body has accepted the implant, a cap will be placed on the post that mimics your natural tooth.
How To Prevent Cavities in Las Vegas
The best way to prevent cavities is by practicing good oral health. Every day, you should brush your teeth in the morning and at night with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes also work well. You should also use a toothpaste endorsed by the American Dental Association that contains fluoride.
In the evening before brushing, you should floss your teeth with dental floss. This helps remove bacteria and other undesirable materials between the teeth. You may also elect to use antibacterial mouthwash, but this should not be used in place of either brushing or flossing.
Always see your dentist for a cleaning and checkup every six months. Your dental care team can clean in places that are hard for you to reach. They can also remove tartar, hardened plaque, that you are unable to remove at home.
Your dental team will also be able to spot any problems, including gum disease, before they become unmanageable, and identify any potential cavities. If you do have cavities, they can be filled immediately rather than needing drastic treatment.
You should also consider fluoride treatments and sealants, especially if your drinking water is not fluoridated. These treatments help seal and protect the teeth and can even help repair limited enamel damage. These treatments are perfectly safe for the whole family, and children often benefit the most.

Cavities in Las Vegas FAQ
No, a cavity is unable to heal on its own. When you have a cavity, they should professionally be taken care of immediately before they cause further damage and require more invasive procedures.
Left untreated, a cavity will progressively get worse until it affects your entire tooth, including the soft, living part inside. If left for long enough, you may need a root canal or need the tooth pulled.
Cavity filling in Las Vegas at Absolute Dental is very reasonably priced and generally covered by insurance. For those without, we offer payment plans and financing.
No. Even with perfect oral health, cavities can sometimes still happen.
In some cases, cavities can appear as a black hole in the teeth; however, most cavities don’t have any symptoms at first and can’t easily be seen in a bathroom mirror. The best way to know you have a cavity is with a dental checkup and cleaning.
