What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Your wisdom teeth are your third molars. They come in at the back of your mouth, beside your second molars. Molars are strong teeth that break down food so you can eat safely. Your third molars typically arrive by the time you’re 21, although your wisdom teeth can arrive in your late teens.
Can I Keep My Wisdom Teeth?
Since molars help with chewing and breaking down food, it may be surprising that most people have their third molars removed. Our ancestors needed their third molars to break down harder foods before dietary changes eventually eliminated the need for wisdom teeth.
Most people do not have enough room in their mouths for their wisdom teeth, and their third molars become impacted. This means the wisdom teeth can erupt through the gums because of the lack of space. In some cases, the tooth twists or pushes neighboring teeth out of place, causing issues with teeth alignment.
You may also need your wisdom teeth removed if you have cysts on these teeth or if they cause an infection.
Up to 37% of people never grow all four wisdom teeth, and some never grow any. You won’t have to worry about surgery if you never develop wisdom teeth. You may also be one of the people who has enough room for wisdom teeth and does not need to have them removed. However, if your wisdom teeth are impacted and cause health issues, you must have them removed.
