At the simplest level, a dental crown is a cap that protects a damaged tooth. That damage may have come from injury, decay, root canals and other procedures, or are occasionally done as a cosmetic procedure. The cap, or crown, helps restore shape, function, and appearance to the affected tooth, and acts similarly to a natural tooth.
Dental crowns are made from many materials, including porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, and precious metal alloys, such as gold and silver. Each material offers different advantages. Porcelain and ceramic are the most popular types of crowns.
Most crowns will last more than a decade, often much longer, as long as they are well taken care of and you practice good oral hygiene. However, they do occasionally break due to everyday wear, injuries, and other factors.
What Can Damage a Crown?
While crowns are generally very sturdy, they can sometimes break, even if they are well taken care of. One of the leading causes of breakage is grinding teeth. This can significantly reduce the lifespan of a crown, and if you grind your teeth at night, Absolute Dental can make you a custom mouth guard that helps prevent the worst effects.
Crowns are also commonly broken due to injury. Sports injuries, auto accidents, and falls (especially in the elderly) can all cause broken crowns or cause dental work to dislodge. During sports, wearing a mouthguard can significantly decrease the instance of broken teeth and crowns.
Eating hard foods, such as hard candy, ice, or popcorn kernels can cause broken crowns as well. Crowns can also be broken when using teeth as tools, such as when opening packages. This is one of the most preventable causes and should be avoided whenever possible.
Finally, decay under the crown can cause failure. Although the crown itself is generally unable to decay, the tooth beneath it may, in certain instances, like when bacteria invades under the seal. Of course, age and wear are a factor for any dental work, and crowns can naturally wear down over many years of use.

Signs Your Crown Needs Attention
There are several signs your crown may need attention.
This includes:
Pain around the crown or tooth.
The crown is loose.
The crown has come off completely.
There are visible cracks or chips in the crown.
The gums around your crown are irritated or swollen.
You have difficulty chewing or eating.
You have an unusual bad taste or odor in your mouth.
In the case of all these symptoms, you should receive dental attention immediately. If your crown is only slightly loose, you may be able to wait a few days, if necessary, but if you have any pain or the crown has fallen off, make a same-day emergency appointment.
What To Do Right Away
If your crown has become damaged or is loose, avoid chewing on that side of the mouth, and avoid eating altogether, if possible. You should aim to keep the area clean and rinse your mouth with saltwater or antibacterial mouthwash. You can also carefully brush around the area with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
You may also take over-the-counter pain medications as directed for any pain, and dental or orthodontic wax may help hold the crown in place or blunt any sharp edges until you are able to get to an appointment.
If your crown has fallen off completely, try to save the crown, if possible. Place it in a clean container, preferably with hard sides, and bring it to your appointment. Try to avoid eating and drink only lukewarm water.
In all cases, schedule an appointment right away.
Repair Or Replace a Broken Crown?
In some cases, your crown may be able to be repaired, but only in cases of small damage, such as chips or cosmetic damage. The underlying tooth must also be healthy. In most cases of crown damage, the entire crown should be replaced. Even for smaller issues, such as small cracks, replacement is generally the preferred solution.
We Accept Most Dental Insurance
Absolute Dental is a preferred provider for most insurances, unions, and hotels that include: Aetna, Ameritas, Boon-Chapman, Caesars Palace, Cigna, Delta Dental, Diversified, Geha, Guardian, Harrah’s, HealthSCOPE Benefits, Health Plan of Nevada (HPN), Humana, Liberty, Met-Life, MGM-MIRAGE, Premier Access, The Standard, Station Casinos, Teachers Health Trust, United Concordia, United Healthcare, Venetian, and The Zenith. We also accept Medicaid.
The most common option for fixing a broken crown is replacement. In some cases, you will receive a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being made. This will help protect the tooth and your oral health in the meantime, and let you eat and drink in an easier manner.
If you and your doctor elect for replacement, the process is similar to the initial crown placement.
In some cases, you may be able to repair the crown with recementing, dental bonding, or polishing and reshaping, but these options are less likely than full replacement for crowns that have received extensive damage.
How Crown Replacement Works
Crown replacement works similarly to crown placement. First, you’ll visit our office for a consultation. The dentist will inspect your crown and the tooth below and then talk through options with you.
If the crown is being replaced, the old crown will be removed, your tooth will be prepared, and impressions and digital scans will be made from which the replacement crown can be manufactured. The manufacturing of the replacement crown often takes at least 24 hours.
In many cases, you will receive a temporary crown while your replacement crown is being made. This will help your comfort levels in the meantime.
After the crown has been manufactured, you will then receive your permanent crown. At your appointment it will be fitted, cemented, and polished to feel as natural as possible.

No, in some cases, like if you have a chipped crown, it can be fixed without replacement as long as the tooth beneath is healthy. In cases of severe damage, the crown will often need to be replaced.
If your crown falls off, you should see a dentist immediately. Try to save the crown in a hard-sided container to avoid further damage. If saving the crown is not possible, this is okay, and you should not worry.
