What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth. It can happen during the day in some instances, but most people experience it at night when sleeping. Many people who experience bruxism while asleep are unaware that it is happening at all.

Teeth grinding and clenching places excessive pressure on the jaw and teeth. Symptoms often start out mild, such as with morning headaches or jaw pain, but can progress to medically significant issues, such as the loss of tooth enamel, tooth and jaw damage, and other oral health concerns.

Since bruxism is often progressive, early diagnosis can usually prevent the worst complications.

Common Causes Of Bruxism

Bruxism often doesn’t have one simple cause. Instead, it is often an amalgamation of other causes.

Stress is one of the major factors. People who have untreated stress have a higher chance of suffering from bruxism when compared to healthy people. Stress can contribute to jaw clenching and grinding, both during the day and at night.

Another of the main contributors is sleep disorders. Bruxism is often associated with sleep apnea and other disturbances. Medications, in particular some antidepressants and other drugs that affect the brain and nervous system, can also contribute.

Finally, bite misalignment can sometimes contribute to abnormal wear and tooth contact while sleeping or chewing. While bite issues are unlikely to be the sole cause of bruxism, it can contribute in significant ways.

Symptoms And Warning Signs Of Bruxism

Many people don’t realize they are grinding their teeth while sleeping. Often, a dentist will first diagnose unusual or excessive signs of wear on your teeth. At your regular Absolute Dental screening, your dentist will perform a visual inspection for worn enamel and other signs of bruxism.

Other early symptoms may include jaw soreness, frequent morning headaches, and fatigue in your face muscles. As the condition progresses, you may experience tooth sensitivity and flattened or worn chewing surfaces and missing enamel.

If the problem becomes chronic or severe, you may even experience chipped or cracked teeth. People with bruxism can also experience ear pain and clicking in the jaw.

Long-Term Effects Of Untreated Teeth Grinding

Left untreated, the long-term effects of bruxism can be serious. Bruxism is generally a progressive condition, meaning it gets worse over time. If treated in a timely manner, symptoms and consequences can usually be kept to a minimum, which is why it pays to be checked early if you think you might be grinding your teeth.

Among the long-term consequences is tooth damage. Bruxism can wear away your teeth. This increases the risk of sensitivity and potentially cavities. In severe cases, bruxism can also result in cracked or broken teeth that may need significant medical interventions, such as a crown or replacement.

Bruxism can also cause problems with the jaw, including damage to the muscles and ligaments that allow for chewing and speaking. Some people with these disorders experience “popping” or clicking in the jaw.

Finally, if you have had any dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and veneers, bruxism can be particularly detrimental to these solutions and cause them to wear prematurely or fail.

Bruxism Treatment Options

Treatment of bruxism teeth grinding depends on the severity of your issue and the cause. The most common solution is a custom night mouthguard that prevents the worst symptoms for the teeth. Custom guards are designed specifically for your bite and help distribute biting force while you sleep.

In severe cases, your dentist may recommend a bite adjustment, which alters the way your teeth come together. You may also receive stress management recommendations, such as exercise or relaxation techniques, that can help deal with the underlying cause.

If your teeth or dental appliances have been damaged by bruxism, your dentist can suggest restorative treatment, such as fillings, crowns, or bonding, that can make your teeth almost as good as new.

When To See A Dentist

You should see a dentist if you have frequent jaw pain or headaches in the morning, or if your partner says that you are grinding your teeth at night. All broken teeth or dental appliances should be inspected by a dentist right away.

Your dentist will also check for signs of bruxism at your regular appointment for cleaning and inspection, so always remember to visit us every six months or as directed by your dentist.

Bruxism Treatment FAQs

Bruxism has many causes, including excess stress, jaw and sleeping disorders, medication usage, and bite misalignment. Your dentist can help you diagnose any causes or risk factors you may have.

In some cases, yes, teeth grinding can go away on its own, but it’s always best to be checked out by a dentist if you are grinding your teeth. Teeth grinding can cause serious issues in the future, and early diagnosis can save time, pain, and money down the road.

For many people, a night guard is the best treatment, but other treatments are potentially available for your case as well. Speak to your dentist for more information.

Yes, anyone, including children, can develop bruxism. While mild bruxism often goes away as a child grows, it’s important to have any signs checked out by a dentist to ensure it doesn’t become a bigger problem.

Most people don’t know if they grind their teeth at night. Your partner may notice, you may wake up with regular headaches or jaw pain in the morning, or your dentist may notice concerning wear on your teeth. It’s important to appear for regularly scheduled appointments so your doctors can diagnose any symptoms early.
