What Is Sedation Dentistry, and How Can It Help You?
Sedation dentistry uses anesthesia or other medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s especially helpful for those who feel anxious, fearful, or sensitive to the sights and sounds of a dental office.
Whether you need a simple cleaning, or a more complex procedure, like implants or crowns, sedation dentistry ensures a calm and smooth experience.
Benefits include a sense of calm and relaxation throughout the appointment, the ability to undergo multiple procedures in one visit, reduced gag reflex, and little to no memory of the procedure.
Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is ideal for many types of patients who have anxiety or other health issues that make coming to the dentist difficult.
People who may benefit include those with:
A dental phobia or extreme anxiety: If visiting the dentist makes you anxious, sedation can help you feel calm with no memory of the procedure.
A strong gag reflex: If you have a strong gag reflex that has made dentistry difficult in the past, sedation can reduce this problem significantly.
Difficulties getting numb: Some patients have difficulty with local anesthetics, including hereditary issues or allergies. Sedation can enhance comfort.
A need for extensive or multiple procedures (e.g., dental implants, crowns): Sedation is also great for those who must undergo multiple procedures at once, like multiple dental implants or crowns. Our anxiety-free dental procedures in Minden are perfect for long procedures.
Sensitive teeth: For patients with heightened sensitivity, even routine cleanings can be uncomfortable. Sedation dulls the sensations and reduces discomfort.
Children who have anxiety: Sedation dentistry can also sometimes be used for children with dental anxiety. Contact us for more information if sedation dentistry might be right for your child.
Sedation requirements for wisdom teeth extractions: Wisdom teeth extractions can be among the most uncomfortable dental procedures. However, they are often medically necessary. Sedation for wisdom teeth extractions is an excellent way to make the procedure far more comfortable.
Disabilities: Patients with cognitive, developmental, or physical conditions may benefit from sedation to ensure a safe and comfortable visit.
No matter who you are, and what your concerns are, Absolute Dental is here for you.

Our Sedation Options in Minden, NV
We offer many sedation options in our Minden dentist office. We offer several levels of sedation to ensure your experience is tailored to your comfort level.
Our options include:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation. It is a nearly odorless gas that is inhaled. It’s administered through a small mask worn over the nose.
This type of sedation takes effect quickly and also wears off quickly after the mask is removed. This type of sedation keeps you relaxed, yet fully conscious throughout the process.
It’s safe for both adults and children, and you can even drive yourself home after the procedure. This form of sedation is ideal for mild anxiety and short procedures. It’s safe for most people.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill about an hour before your appointment. You remain conscious, but you’ll feel very relaxed and possibly sleepy. This is a kind of middle-of-the-road sedation when compared to the other options.
With oral sedation, there is usually a deeper sense of calm than with a nitrous oxide procedure. Patients are generally drowsy but still responsive. The relaxation is deeper than nitrous oxide, and patients often have little memory of the procedure at all.
However, you will need someone to drive you home from the procedure as you are not able to drive yourself. Always follow all pre-sedation instructions from your doctor.
IV Sedation
Our Minden dental IV sedation, also known as “sleep dentistry” is administered through a vein for a quick and strong effect. While you’re technically conscious during the procedure, most patients drift into a light sleep and have little to no memory of the appointment.
This is the deepest level of relaxation we offer. It is ideal for patients with lengthy procedures, such as a number of crowns or implants, and for those with severe anxiety. Your vital signs will be monitored throughout the course of your visit.
With this procedure, you will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment. You’ll also need to follow some pre-appointment procedures, like fasting. Your dentist can tell you more.
Local Anesthesia
While not a form of sedation, local anesthesia is commonly used alongside sedation methods to block pain at the procedure site. This helps ensure a pain-free experience, and works in tandem with sedation to maximize comfort.
Unless conditions, like severe anxiety prevent it, there is no need to be fully sedated for most minor procedures if you’d prefer not to. Your comfort level, health history, and other factors will dictate sedation level. As always, we are receptive to you and your needs.
What To Expect During Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment
If you’re feeling nervous about the appointment, here’s what to expect:
Consultation: This is a simple discussion of your anxiety, medical, and dental history. We’ll also discuss your sedation preferences and choose the safest and most effective option for you.
There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of, and our staff will treat you with the utmost kindness and care.
Preparation: Depending on the type of sedation, we’ll provide clear, simple instructions for before you come to visit us for the procedure. This may include fasting, avoiding certain medications, and arranging for someone to accompany you to the appointment and drive you home.
During the procedure: Depending on what type of sedation is selected, you’ll feel relaxed, groggy, or sleepy. During the procedure, we’ll keep a close watch on your vital signs, like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. You’ll be in expert hands the entire time.
Post-procedure: Recovery times vary on the sedation type, but we’ll give you detailed instructions to follow at home, and may schedule a follow-up appointment to check on you.
