What Are Braces?

Braces consist of different parts attached to the teeth with bonding cement in orthodontic treatment to straighten crooked teeth. Traditional braces are made of silver-colored stainless steel alloy. Other metals are combined with it to prevent rust. Rubber bands are then hooked onto the brackets and are used to apply pressure onto individual teeth, moving them into the desired position over a period of time.

Today, however, you have more choices than just metal. You can choose invisible braces made from clear plastic. If you live near Lake Tahoe, Carson City, or the surrounding area, you can schedule an appointment to discuss all your options with an orthodontist in Minden, NV.

Pros And Cons Of Braces

Consider both the permanent and temporary effects on adults who get braces.

Pros:

  • You get an attractive smile with straight teeth
  • Your appearance improves
  • Your health improves
  • Your confidence improves

Cons:

  • Pain or discomfort with moving teeth over time
  • Careful attention to cleaning your teeth with braces is required
  • The cost may be out of your budget (we have solutions for that!)
  • You must be careful about what you eat and drink to protect your teeth

Do Teeth Get Weak After Braces?

The enamel in your teeth can weaken if you don’t brush and floss regularly. Food can become trapped around braces causing bacteria to form leading to tooth decay. This, in turn, creates demineralization resulting in white spots appearing where the enamel wears thin.

Four Things To Know Before Getting Braces As An Adult:

  1. Adult braces options: Your Orthodontist will review your options after an initial consultation. You may choose clear braces, metal braces, or self-ligating braces (which are metal braces without rubber bands).
  2. Length of treatment: Adults’ teeth are already set and therefore take longer than a growing child to move the teeth into place. You can expect anywhere from 14 to 36 months, depending on how much treatment you need.
  3. Cost and financing: The total cost of braces depends on the type of braces you choose, whether metal or Invisalign. Your Minden dental office can provide you with a range of costs. The typical range for orthodontia can be $1,800 – $10,000.
  4. Dental insurance: Your costs may be fully or partially covered if you have private medical and dental insurance through your employer. Check with the company to see what is and is not covered. Your dental treatments will not be covered if you are an adult on Medicaid. Check into getting private dental insurance as an individual and what the waiting time is before seeking dental treatment.

Braces May Be Medically Necessary

The following conditions may make it medically necessary for braces:

  • A misaligned jaw hinge, generally called TMJ
  • Overcrowding, or too many teeth for a small jaw, which can lead to poor chewing and health
  • Overbites or underbites, which occurs when the lower or upper jaw structure doesn’t close correctly when biting down
  • Gaps in teeth, which can cause mispronunciations when speaking or lisping

The above conditions, if left untreated, can worsen your overall health and lead to dental decay and constant pain. A consultation with a dentist is your first step in learning if you are a good candidate for braces.

Use waxed floss (not unwaxed) so that the string slides easily around each tooth. Be careful not to pull too hard, or you could pop a wire on a bracket. Allow at least 15 minutes to do a thorough job of flossing.

Your oral health is important. When you have braces on your teeth, you should brush carefully with a soft brush in a circular motion on each tooth. Keep your jaw open to get all around each tooth. Never keep your jaw closed; brushing hard on the tooth surface can wear down your gums.

First, swish water around your mouth to remove loose debris. Then position a soft toothbrush (either manual or electric) at a 45-degree angle, gently brushing along the gum line. Move the toothbrush to brush the brackets gently, then angle up under the brackets.

Expect mild discomfort or pain lasting a few days as your teeth adjust to the movement. You shouldn’t experience any extreme discomfort but if you do, let us know quickly.

Avoid sticky candy (taffy), hard-to-crunch (candied apple), or any foods that can cause pulling on your braces. You can enjoy eating regular healthy meals.

Braces work for any age! Generally, youngsters ages 9-14, are the best age for braces because their teeth haven’t been permanently settled yet. However, it doesn’t mean an adult can’t get braces.

Yes, you can change your mind but discuss it with an orthodontist in Minden first. They can answer all your fears and worries about braces. We want your orthodontic care at Absolute Dental in Minden to succeed!
