Common Types of Dental Appliances That Break
There are many types of dental appliances, and many ways these appliances can break. Below, we’ll help you understand what may go wrong and if the breakage is considered an emergency.
Braces
Braces are one of the most likely dental appliances to break. Traditional braces, lingual braces, and ceramic braces all use a wire and brackets to straighten the teeth. While durable, sticky or hard foods, sports trauma, and other issues can cause brackets to come loose, wires to break, and bands to detach.
In general, your braces breaking is an emergency. If your braces break in any way, call us immediately for an emergency appointment and one of our orthodontists will see you shortly.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners use a series of trays to align the teeth. They are a more discreet option than wired braces, and often more durable. However, occasionally one of the trays can crack, causing the aligner to not work properly.
While this is less of an emergency than broken metal braces, not wearing your appliances can slow progress and you should make an appointment as soon as possible.
Crowns and Bridges
Dental work, such ascrowns and bridges, are relatively sturdy, but can break due to a number of factors. When these appliances break, especially crowns, it is always an emergency. If your crown has become loose or fallen off, or if your bridge is out of place, call us for an emergency appointment.
Dentures
Dentures can also fail in a number of ways. While generally not an immediate emergency, broken dentures can make speaking and eating difficult and can irritate your gums. If your dentures have become broken, call us for an appointment for them to be remade and refitted or repaired.
Dental Implants
Dental implants, sometimes known as false teeth, are nearly as tough as your natural teeth, but can become broken through trauma during sports, car accidents, and other dangerous activities. When dental implants break, it is always an emergency, and you should make an appointment as soon as possible.
How To Avoid Breaking Dental Appliances
In every case, prevention is more desirable than repair. You can avoid breaking your appliances by followingthe rules your dentist or orthodontist has set out, especially guidance for routine cleaning and oral health — brush twice per day, floss once, and visit the dentist for a cleaning and checkup every six months or as directed, even if you have braces.
You should also avoid chewy, hard, and sticky foods, such as caramel, chewing gum, popcorn kernels, ice, and anything else that might break or dislodge your appliances. You should also try to limit overly sugary foods, such as soft drinks, for their detrimental effect on the teeth.
If you play sports, you should always wear a mouthguard. If you need one, you can have a custom mouthguard fitted at Absolute Dental. You should also store removable appliances safely, such as in a case or other designated places.
