Common Causes Of Loose Or Dislodged Teeth

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a loose tooth is most commonly caused by disease, injury, or infection. The most common causes of loose or dislodged teeth include:

Dental Trauma From Car Accidents, Sports Injuries, Or Falls

Being involved in an accident that results in damage to the mouth can cause teeth to become loose or, in some cases, even fall out.

Advanced Gum Disease (Periodontitis)

Periodontal disease (gum disease) causes the structures that hold your teeth in place to break down, resulting in loose teeth. This is one of the most common causes of loose teeth.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

While it won’t happen right away, over time, grinding your teeth can damage them to such an extent that the teeth can begin to become loose in the socket.

Pregnancy

The surges in hormones produced during pregnancy can potentially cause a temporary loosening of the teeth. This condition is referred to as “pregnancy gingivitis” and usually clears up after the patient gives birth.

Symptoms To Watch For

In most cases, if a tooth is loose, you will notice that your tooth/teeth just don’t feel quite right when you eat, floss, or brush. You can also experience symptoms, such as:

  • Redness in the gums
  • Tender gums
  • Receding gums
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Discoloration of the teeth
  • Bleeding in the gums

Why Prompt Dental Treatment Is Crucial

According to the Cleveland Clinic, an adult experiencing a loose tooth, a knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth), or a partially knocked-out tooth from an injury is always a dental emergency. Tooth stabilization is most likely to be successful if it happens within 30 minutes to an hour of an injury. If you are unable to reach the dentist in this time frame, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room.

If you’re experiencing a loose tooth without a dental injury, you are likely unaware of the cause, but putting off treatment any longer is only going to increase the likelihood of complications. Therefore, it’s best to make a dental appointment as soon as possible.

Without Immediate Care, A Loose Tooth Can Result In The Following Complications

  • Trouble chewing
  • Issues with misalignment (bite issues)
  • Increased pressure on surrounding teeth
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Increases the risk of permanent tooth loss
  • Challenges in restoring aesthetics and functionality

Emergency Treatment Options For Loose Or Dislodged Teeth

Treatment for a loose or dislodged tooth varies depending on the severity and the cause of the issue.

For Loose Teeth Caused By Gum Disease, Treatment Will Likely Be One Or More Of The Following

  • Scaling and root planing (i.e. “deep dental cleanings”)
  • Gum and/or bone grafts
  • Osseous surgery (gum flap surgery)

If You’re Experiencing A Loose Or Dislodged Tooth From Dental Trauma, The Treatment May Include

  • Examination and X-rays: To assess the extent of the damage to your teeth, gums, and facial bones, X-rays and a physical examination of your mouth will generally be required before further treatment can be performed.
  • Repositioning loose teeth using dental splints: Tooth splinting is when a dentist uses dental glue to bond the tooth to the neighboring teeth to hold it in place while it heals.
  • Bite adjustment: When the dentist takes a small amount of enamel from the loose tooth, and the adjacent tooth to take the pressure off your bite, it heals.
  • Re-implantation for knocked-out teeth: If the tooth has been placed back into your gums correctly, the dentist will ensure it’s in the right position, and create tooth splints to hold it in place. In some cases, a root canal may need to be performed as well if an infection is a risk. According to the Cleveland Clinic, for the best chance of successful re-implantation, you should pick the tooth up (avoid touching the roots), rinse the tooth with cow’s milk, and store the tooth in a glass of milk until you can get to an emergency dentist.

Treatment Of Surrounding Tissues And Gums

When too much damage has been done to the gums and surrounding tissues either through dental trauma, disease, or infection, more dental work may be required for tooth stabilization. Luckily, there are multiple options for restoring proper dental function, and restoring the appearance of your teeth.

Long-Term Restoration Plans

When needed, treatment for a loose or dislodged tooth may include:

  • Dental crowns
  • Dental bridges
  • Dental implants
  • A partial denture

How To Handle A Dental Emergency At Home

When it comes to an oral health emergency, getting to the dentist as soon as possible is extremely important. After you’ve called the emergency dentist, it’s important to do the following while you wait:

Tips For Loose Teeth

  • Avoid touching or wiggling the tooth
  • Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce swelling
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash twice a day to prevent infection
  • Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy

Tips For Dislodged (Knocked-Out) Teeth

  • Pick up the tooth, avoiding the root
  • Rinse gently with water or milk (no soap or chemicals)
  • Store in a cup of milk, or under your tongue in pooled saliva until you reach the dentist
  • Apply gentle pressure, or gently bite down on a piece of gauze to control any bleeding

Important: Getting to the dentist as soon as possible (within 30-60 minutes) will give your tooth the best chance of successful re-implantation. If you’re experiencing a dental injury, call Absolute Dental to find a same-day emergency dentist appointment near you.
