A teenager holds her face in pain due to wire irritations from her braces.

Wire Irritation

Orthodontic treatment aimed at achieving teeth alignment and a healthy smile often involves the use of dental braces wire. While these devices are significantly effective in correcting a number of dental complications and conditions, some may experience wire irritation.

This discomfort can stem from several factors, such as loose or protruding wires, which can lead to irritation of the soft tissue in the mouth. Understanding the causes and how to address wire irritation is necessary for individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment to ensure a smoother, more comfortable experience on your journey to a beautifully aligned smile.

At Absolute Dental, our skilled and experienced team of orthodontists can help you achieve the smile of your dreams while keeping discomfort to a minimum.

Wire Irritation Causes

Wire irritation can occur for many reasons, most of which are factors you have little control over, such as:

  • Long wire ends: There are instances where the wire extends beyond the typical endpoint of the last bracket. When this occurs, you may experience the brace wire poking your cheek and causing discomfort. Wires sticking out of braces is a situation that should be addressed immediately with your dentist to avoid further discomfort and issues such as cuts, further irritation, and infection.
  • Shift in wire position: Everyday actions such as eating, oral hygiene care, or trauma to the mouth can lead to dental braces’ loose wire.
  • Orthodontic adjustments: New adjustments made to your hardware can cause discomfort while your mouth works to adjust to the changes.

Wire Irritation Treatments

Wire irritation can lead to more issues than simple discomfort if left untreated for too long. The discomfort could increase in severity, making it intolerable; it also poses an infection risk if the wire breaks the skin, causing cuts or ulcers.

To prevent further discomfort and reduce your risk for infection if you encounter a loose wire during your orthodontic treatment, you can try some home remedies until you can meet with your orthodontist to obtain a more prolonged fix:

  • Orthodontic wax: Orthodontic wax can work as an effective protective barrier between the wire and soft tissue in the mouth and help alleviate some discomfort you may be experiencing.
  • Salt water rinse: A salt water rinse is a tried and true home remedy to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Over-the-counter pain medication: Over-the-counter pain medication can help ease some discomfort, and medications like Ibuprofen can reduce any inflammation that may be present.

Wire Irritation Prevention

Like with most things, prevention is always the best option. You can prevent wire irritation by attending regular orthodontic appointments and practicing good oral hygiene. Your orthodontist can adjust your hardware appropriately to reduce the risk of potential wire irritation before it becomes an issue.

Your orthodontist is your biggest asset in avoiding discomfort during treatment by checking and adjusting your wires accordingly. While home remedies can provide some relief, typically, this relief is temporary. Proper care and attention to your hardware are vital for effective treatment.

If you experience any complications with your hardware, schedule an appointment with your dental professional as soon as possible to continue your journey to a happy, more radiant smile with the least difficulties possible.

FAQs

Our most recommended path to a solution for a wire sticking out is to contact your dental care team to fix the problem. If this is not immediately possible, you can apply a small piece of dental wax to the protruding wire to serve as a temporary barrier. Take care of any cuts or sores you may have acquired with a saltwater rinse.

A dental brace wire can become loose for many reasons, including the examples listed above. However, other common reasons we come across are:

  • Eating chewy or hard foods
  • A change in the structure of the teeth
  • Injury or trauma to the mouth

Not all dental problems are emergencies, especially with a loose wire. We still advise seeing your orthodontist as soon as possible to correct the issue.

However, if you encounter any other issues, such as bleeding that won’t stop, pain that increases in severity and is not manageable with pain medication, severe trauma to the mouth, or broken facial bones, we advise treatment should be sought as quickly as possible.

Loose Bracket

Sad teenager holding a model of teeth with braces and a retainer.

A loose bracket is a common orthodontic issue that occurs while wearing braces. If not promptly addressed, your treatment could experience a setback that could take months to rectify. By addressing the problem quickly, you can ensure your orthodontic treatment remains on track while reducing the risk of experiencing discomfort.

Common reasons brackets become loose:

  • Injury or trauma to the mouth
  • Eating hard foods
  • Biting down hard directly on one of the lower braces
  • Aggressive or improper oral hygiene practices
  • Low bond strength of the bracket to the tooth from tissue inflammation or contamination with saliva during the bonding procedure.

Wire Irritation

model of teeth with braces

Wire irritation typically occurs when the wire secured into your brackets becomes loose, breaks, or pops out of the brackets. If not addressed promptly, this can lead to discomfort, cuts, sores, and infection. The most common reasons you may experience wire irritation is the result of:

  • Eating foods not appropriate when receiving braces treatment, such as hard and/or sticky foods
  • Injury or trauma to the mouth
  • Poking and prodding at your braces

Wire irritation is not a cause for panic. However, it is an issue you will want to address quickly to reduce aversive side effects that can easily lead to more serious problems and discomfort. Absolute Dental is available to address your orthodontic emergency needs.

Lost Separator

3d render of rubber separators between teethSeparators are small rubber bands or metal rings placed between teeth to create space for the subsequent placement of orthodontic bands. Separators are designed to be temporary, but they occasionally become dislodged or fall out prematurely. This can happen due to factors such as:

  • Aggressive or vigorous flossing
  • Chewing sticky foods
  • Natural movement of teeth
  • Trauma or injury to the mouth

If you lose a separator, it is important to notify your orthodontist as quickly as possible. The absence of a separator can negatively impact future planned orthodontic adjustments, and immediate replacement may be necessary to support the proper spacing between teeth. Contacting your orthodontist immediately can ensure your treatment plan stays on track and that your teeth are adequately prepared for the next phase of your orthodontic journey.
