Dental trauma is any traumatic injury to your teeth, gums, jaw, or surrounding tissue. These injuries are caused by impact or force, such as a car accident, or being hit in the face with a baseball or other hard object.
Trauma to the mouth and mouth area always needs professional evaluation, even if it seems minor. This is because damage isn’t alway obvious and can be hidden. These hidden injuries can lead to larger, and potentially serious problems, such as infection or nerve damage.
Even a small chip can expose the soft inner part of your teeth, called dentin. This can cause numerous problems.
The bottom line? You should get any traumatic injury to the mouth or teeth professionally checked.

Dislodged Teeth
Teeth are considered dislodged when they are pushed out of position, either sideways or further in or out from their normal resting position. Officially, this is called a luxated tooth or teeth.
Please note: Never force back a dislodged tooth. Always see a professional.
Knocked-Out Teeth
Also known as avulsed teeth. If your tooth has been knocked out, this is a critical emergency, and you must see a dentist right away. Provide immediate first aid care (see next section), and call us right away. In some cases, we can save the tooth, or we will provide replacements for those that cannot be saved.
Soft Tissue Injuries (Gums, Lips, Cheeks)
These injuries include cuts and lacerations to your gums or the soft tissue in and around your mouth. For these types of injuries, treatment often includes cleaning of wounds and stitches, if needed.
Root Fractures
These are cracks or fractures in the root of a tooth, and they can cause a toothache. They are often very hard to see, and require an X-ray to diagnose. Depending on what kind of fracture and where they occur, we provide a number of different treatments.
Absolute Dental can provide treatment to all of the above injuries and more.
Immediate First Aid: Your Dental Trauma Guide Before You Reach Us
If you are experiencing an emergency, below are some dental trauma guidelines for how to provide first aid for some common dental injuries:
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, or the white part you can see normally, only. You should gently rinse the tooth in water, but do not scrub or use soap. If possible, transport the tooth to us in milk or saliva. Please note: Time is vital for reimplantation. Get to us as fast as possible, and we may be able to save the tooth.
Chipped/Cracked Tooth
Rinse mouth with warm water, apply cold compress to the cheek, and save the fragment if possible.
Dislodged Tooth
Gently attempt to reposition with light finger pressure (do not force), bite gently on gauze to stabilize. Apply cold compress.
Bleeding/Soft Tissue
Rinse mouth, apply pressure with clean gauze for 10-15 mins, use cold compress.
Again, these are temporary measures and should never take the place of a visit to the dentist.

What To Expect During Your Emergency Visit
We follow a specific protocol for any dental trauma at Absolute Dental.
We perform an immediate assessment of the injury to gauge its severity and plan next steps.
We work on pain management. This may include the administration of medications or other medical devices to reduce pain.
After the initial assessment and pain management, we work to diagnose the problem specifically with a number of diagnostic tests, including X-rays and other techniques.
Finally, we initiate treatment based on a dentist’s orders immediately.
Answering how long dental trauma lasts is a difficult question as every injury is different. Healing times can vary from a couple of hours to multiple months. How long it takes for gums to heal after a tooth injury may be very different from how long it will take to recover from a chipped or knocked-out tooth.
However, at Absolute Dental, we can promise one thing — we will never leave you on your own. We always schedule follow up appointments to monitor healing and ensure treatment success.
There are also a few things you can do to help shorten recovery time, such as eating soft, sugar-free foods, and practicing good oral hygiene, such as brushing twice a day and flossing once, or as directed by your dentist.

Trauma is unpredictable, and thus, there’s a small chance it may happen to anyone. However, by maintaining healthy teeth, you can reduce the severity and length of traumatic events.
Additionally, if you or your child plays sports, wearing a mouthguard can help protect their teeth.
