Why Might You Need A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns restore function and appearance to the teeth, making it easier to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. You may need a crown to repair a fractured tooth, protect a weak tooth from breaking, or to cover a tooth with a large filling.

Crowns are also used to anchor dental bridges or cover dental implants and root canal-treated teeth. While there are many different styles of crown available, ranging from extra durable to almost invisible, the right crown for you is a personalized decision that balances aesthetics, durability, and location.

The Five Main Types Of Dental Crowns

Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, metal, and resin. Each has different care requirements, and all have slightly different properties, including appearance, durability, and cost.

In many cases, the best choice for your dental crown depends on the tooth location and if you have any specific habits, such as teeth grinding.

All-Ceramic And All-Porcelain Crowns

All-ceramic and all-porcelain crowns are the most natural-looking crown options. They mimic real tooth enamel perfectly and will likely not be noticed either by the wearer or others. All-ceramic and all-porcelain crowns are ideal for high-visibility areas, like front teeth, and are a good choice for those with metal allergies.

While all-ceramic and all-porcelain crowns are aesthetically superior, they may not possess the same fracture resistance as metal for heavy chewing forces or for those who often grind their teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are made from zirconium dioxide, a robust type of ceramic celebrated for its biocompatibility and durability. Zirconia crowns combine the high strength of metal with the pleasing appearance of porcelain.

This type of crown is excellent for posterior (back) teeth that endure heavy biting forces, while still looking natural.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal (PFM) Crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, also known by their acronym PFM crowns, are a hybrid option, combining a durable metal base with a tooth-colored porcelain exterior. These crowns balance strength and aesthetics effectively for both front and back teeth.

They do however have one main drawback — the porcelain coating may chip over time, and a dark metal line might become visible at the gumline if recession occurs.

Gold And Metal Alloy Crowns

Gold crowns are the most classic option. They are crafted from a blend of gold, copper, and other precious metals, and are known for their exceptional strength and longevity. Metal crowns made of gold or other alloys are the most durable option and can withstand intense biting forces. They also require the least amount of enamel removal.

The main drawback to gold crowns is their metallic color. This usually makes them best suited for out-of-sight molars in the back of the mouth.

Composite Resin Crowns

Composite resin crowns are crafted from a blend of plastic and fine glass-like particles. This type of crown is the most affordable option. However, it is also the least durable compared to all other types of crowns.

While modestly priced, composite resin crowns are more prone to wear and fracture. They are often used as temporary solutions or budget-friendly short-term restorations.

Dental Implants And Implant Crown Types

There is another type of crown that is slightly different from the types above that acts as a cover for natural teeth. These are called dental implant crowns. With this type of dental apparatus, the implant crowns attach to titanium abutments screwed into the jawbone rather than natural teeth.

Dental implants with attached crowns are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They ensure other teeth don’t shift around and help preserve jawbone and natural face structure.

When it comes to dental implant crowns, the material choice follows the same aesthetics-versus-strength tradeoffs as the tooth-supported restorations above.

In addition, implant crowns generally cost more than traditional crowns, due to the complexity of implant surgery and the abutment components required. There will also be some healing time associated with dental implant crowns, due to the nature of implant surgery.

The Dental Crown Procedure In Las Vegas

Getting a crown typically requires at least two visits to the dentist. At Absolute Dental in Las Vegas, the process is no different.

During your first visit, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel on your tooth to ensure a proper fit. They will also take impressions or digital images of your teeth, basically a plastic or plaster mold that will help ensure a proper fit for the true crown. They’ll then place an inexpensive temporary crown over the tooth to last until your next visit.

During the second visit, the temporary cap is removed, and the custom crown is bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Within a few hours you should be able to eat and drink normally.

In some cases, you may be able to get a crown on the same day, utilizing same-day crown technology called CEREC, which combines digital scanning with computer aided fabrication.

Cost Of Dental Crowns In Las Vegas

Dental crown cost in Las Vegas varies significantly based on the material used and other factors.

In general, dental crowns can range from $500 to $2,000+ per tooth, with the average in Las Vegas falling between $1,100 and $1,700, without insurance. In addition, costs can increase if additional procedures, like a root canal or core buildup, are needed.

However, dental crowns are often covered by insurance. Absolute Dental takes almost all forms of major dental insurance. For those without dental insurance or with a limited ability to pay, Absolute Dental also offers generous payment plans and financing.

We want to ensure everyone gets the dental care they need, regardless of the ability to pay. Remember, by delaying treatment, you are likely costing yourself more money. Treating the issue early almost always means better medical outcomes, less pain, and more modestly priced procedures.

Caring For Your Dental Crown

Dental crowns can last anywhere from five to 15 years or longer, depending on the material and how well you care for them.

The best way to ensure crown longevity is to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes brushing twice per day, in the morning before breakfast, and before going to bed at night. You should floss daily as well, in the evening before brushing.

You should also avoid chewing hard foods, like ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy. This may fracture the crown or your natural teeth, especially if they have become weakened in some way.

You should also try to avoid excessive teeth grinding to protect the crown from damage. If you grind your teeth at night, you may be a good candidate for a special mouthguard that prevents nighttime grinding.

Finally, regular dental checkups to monitor the crown and underlying tooth health are crucial. You should visit your dentist twice per year (every six months) or as directed.

FAQ

No, dental crowns are considered semi-permanent. In general, they last about 10 to 15 years, if cared for properly.

If aesthetics is a primary concern, like for a front tooth, all-porcelain and all-ceramic crowns are among the best choices, due to their relative durability and their natural look. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are also a good choice for similar reasons.

Yes, a cavity on a crowned tooth is possible. While the crown itself cannot decay, the tooth beneath the crown may.

In general, no. The dental crown process is not painful. You may feel some mild discomfort during and after the procedure, but there is a low likelihood of pain.
