At any age, strong teeth and cavity prevention are of the utmost importance. The best way to prevent cavities is to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once, and visit your dentist for a checkup every six months or as directed.
However, there’s another treatment that you should be aware of that can drastically help reduce the occurrence of cavities: dental fluoride treatment for adults.
Fluoride is a key mineral for dental health. It is often added to the municipal water supplies in the United States, and almost all ADA recommended toothpaste has it.
However, this is often not enough for full coverage, and a special treatment performed by your dentist can be helpful. At Absolute Dental, we provide these expert fluoride treatments in Las Vegas.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen and even repair the enamel on your teeth (tooth enamel is the hard, white outer part of your teeth). Cavities are caused by acid created when bacteria in your mouth mix with the sugar in the foods you eat. This acid eats away at that enamel until you have a cavity.
Fluoride helps make this enamel more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugar. It can even help to repair it.
A dentist fluoride treatment involves applying a higher concentration of fluoride than found in toothpaste or water to your teeth. It is completely painless and takes just a few moments.
Why Should Adults in Las Vegas Consider Fluoride Treatment?
As is sometimes assumed, fluoride treatment is not only for children. In fact, it is an excellent choice for most adults.
Specific risk factors for adults include:
Increased risk of tooth decay on root surfaces due to gum recession caused by old age and early stage gum disease.
Dry mouth conditions, often caused by medications, can reduce saliva’s protective effect. Fluoride treatments can provide extra protection.
Adults also have a higher presence of crowns, bridges, or braces. These can trap plaque, a substance which causes cavities.
A history of frequent cavities.
Fluoride can also play a supporting role in gum health by reducing sensitivity of teeth and strengthening enamel where gum disease has revealed previously covered teeth.
For adults, dentistry for fluoride treatments are routine, painless, and help keep your smile happy and healthy.
Fluoride treatment cost is also relatively low, and is part of a good dental hygiene routine.

Key Benefits of Professional Fluoride Treatment for Adults
There are a number of benefits to professional fluoride treatments.
Treatments strengthen tooth enamel. This is the part of your teeth attacked by cavities.
Fluoride treatments help remineralize early tooth decay. In plain language, this means fluoride treatments can actually help reverse early cavities by rebuilding your tooth enamel.
Importantly, fluoride treatments reduce the risk of future cavities by strengthening the enamel of your teeth, armoring it against the acid created by bacteria and sugar.
Fluoride treatment decreases tooth sensitivity by strengthening your tooth enamel, and by helping block microscopic pathways in your teeth called “dentin tubules,” which are the primary pathways for sensitivity.
Finally, professional fluoride treatments help protect dental investments, like crowns and bridges via the same mechanisms above.
The Fluoride Treatment Process at Absolute Dental in Las Vegas
So, what is fluoride treatment actually like? At Absolute Dental, our fluoride treatments in Las Vegas are routine, painless, safe, and easy.
Fluoride treatments are generally performed after a teeth cleaning and checkup, although there are some instances where it is performed outside of this setting.
Generally, after your teeth are cleaned, a hygienist will place either a fluoride varnish on your teeth with a small application device, like a q-tip, or as a gel or foam applied via a dental tray.
For adults, the varnish application is the most common method of application. It takes just a few seconds, does not cause any pain, and generally doesn’t even taste bad. After a few moments you’re done, but your teeth will thank you. They will be stronger, healthier, and more resilient to cavities for months to come.

How Long After Fluoride Treatment Can You Eat or Drink?
Many people want to know: how long after fluoride treatment can you drink coffee or water? Or how long do you have to wait to eat after fluoride treatment?
The answer depends on what type of fluoride treatment you have gotten (and your dentist and other dental staff will always tell you best practices — make sure to follow their orders).
For gels and foams, you can generally eat in just 30 minutes. You should also wait this long before smoking, drinking, or rinsing your mouth with anything, including water.
For varnish, the most common form of application for adults, you should wait at least four to six hours before eating or drinking. After this, you’ll also want to try and eat soft foods until 24 hours after, and avoid hot or sugary drinks.
What Foods and Drinks Should You Avoid Initially After Fluoride Treatment?
For at least 24 hours after your professional treatment, you should try to avoid:
Very hot or cold drinks
Sticky foods, like gums and candy
Hard, crunchy foods, like granola, popcorn, hard candies, lollipops, and suckers
Alcohol
Drinks that may potentially stain your teeth, like coffee and tea, at least for the first few hours after your treatment
When Can You Brush Your Teeth After Fluoride Treatment?
Brushing your teeth after fluoride treatment should always be directed by a doctor. However, as a general rule, you should wait at least four to six hours before brushing your teeth, especially when you have received a fluoride varnish.
In some cases, you may want to wait as many as 24 hours before brushing your teeth to allow for maximum fluoride absorption into the enamel of your teeth. Again, the best advice will come from your dentist or dental hygienist.

Absolutely. Professional fluoride treatments are safe, effective, painless, and quick. This procedure helps strengthen tooth enamel, which helps prevent cavities.
This depends on your unique situation. You should follow your dentist’s orders. However, if you are an adult at low risk for cavities, every six to 12 months is generally sufficient.
Yes, you can still benefit from professional fluoride treatments. Fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash have low concentrations of the mineral. A fluoride treatment offers a high concentration that boosts protection over and above the amounts you get in water, toothpaste, and other sources.
Fluoride treatments can help reverse existing cavities but only specific types and cavities that have not progressed past a certain stage. For initial stage cavities, fluoride treatments can help reverse the process of tooth decay in some instances.
There are very few side effects to professional fluoride treatments, and most people never experience any. As with any medical procedure, there is a very small risk of allergic reaction or upset stomach, but these are exceedingly rare.
